I don't really get the stubbornness from ownership about retaining. If they trade him, they pay 30-50% of his salary. If they don't trade him, they pay 100% of his salary. As long as they don't replace him with another expensive piece (and why should they right now?), they'd come off better in the end financially. Especially if there's a first involved, to me that sounds pretty good.

I am not even concerned if Coleman stays, he will still be worth a decent amount in a few months. And he is a professional and will be fine staying in Calgary if we cannot trade him.
With Kadri I am worried about his value going way down, and a lot of negativity in the locker room. Didn't he ask to be traded?

If Kadri wants out himself he will be gone tomorrow under whatever circumstances and returns i think.
You cant leave him in that locker room if he is as sour about the situation as he seems to be. To me he hasnt looked truly engaged for a while.

If the Flames had two retention spots left I wonder if Coleman would have been dealt already?
Sure seems like it, but they are holding the last spot in case somebody meets their price for retention on Kadri.
Hopefully they don't end up missing the boat and keeping both of them past the deadline.

No. Pretty simple if teams don't want to deal with NTC/NMC then they have to pay more on term and dollar. I don't ever blame or look down on players for using their NTC/NMC, it's their rights. Players generally get very little say in where they play, so I can't blame them when they do get a say and they use it. I would do the same thing.

Seems to me like it's a top 3 pick from this year that will put the butts in the seats. Make this team bad. Revenue is going to be dramatically affected if the Flames do not have a marquee offensive talent.

I also think you run the risk of having a very salty Kadri in the locker room if you don't trade him.

And how do you know that they didn’t ask him? Not everything is in the media. They could have asked him in passing ( I am sure they talk to each other) and he said he wouldn’t. All speculation on my part but I would assume the question would of came up.

I don’t know why people are surprised about the Kadri stuff. I’m guessing it has more to do with the return than the retention but I never thought Flames were going to trade Kadri off cheap and that Weegar trade didn’t give me a lot of confidence that players with term have value.

From the sounds of it Kadri has already turned trades to a few destinations, so I can't see him being disgruntled if he comes back. If he really wanted out he would have accepted trades to Carolina or Los Angeles (supposedly).

If it really was linked to also taking back Nichushkin's contract, then I could see the apprehension. That contract has future buyout or retention written all over it. I get accepting the need for dead cap through retention or buyout when you have no other choice, but if you can avoid walking right into it, you probably should.

They still need bodies and bodies factory trade Kadri they could be down to Backlund as the only top nine center on the team after next year
