We know he's alluding to racism, and I'm certain there is an element of that, of course. Its not as though Eastern Europe is notorious for being the cradle of modern society's woke movement.

That being said, you cant ignore the fact that many of these places are former USSR and despite consistent tensions, they are a very close-knit society.

Families are intertwined, travel is common and frequent. These are people they know in a conflict that they understand.

Comparing that to the Syrian refugees, those were people with a religion and culture they dont understand as well, from countries they dont know as well or have as close ties to, etc. In huge waves.

So yes, his allegory of saying that "Theres a reason Uncle Phil only took in Will" is pretty spot on. He wasnt trying to save the world, he was trying to save his family member.

So to just say 'its racism' while not incorrect, is disingenuous. Its more nuanced than that.

However, I definitely will admit some of those reporters when they're talking strictly about 'how these people look' and specifically addressing blond hair and blue eyes, etc. Yeah. That is straight up racist and more than cringe-worthy.

Also though, you have two fairly modern, mechanized militaries duking it out in the streets of modern cities...you definitely dont see this kind of thing every day.

Totally agree with this post. It's easier for European countries to accept masses of other fully European people for the reasons you mentioned. Having said that, Europe accepts a lot of refugees from around the world. It's not like their doors are closed. The real question is why other wealthy countries in Asia and the Middle East do have nearly completely shut doors, if it is all about racism.

There is also the feeling in many countries that if refugees reach a safe country, and then continue risking their lives by travelling through other countries without being processed and legally transferred, they are no longer refugees and become migrants. Ethically, there is difference between the two.

During first couple of days of the war, people were wondering what country Putin will invade next after Ukraine. Now it's not clear if Putin will be able to even take Kyiv.

Update on my wife -

This morning her and her 2 companions arrived in Ternopil, just east of Lviv. It was a brutal train ride, but 20 hours later they finally arrived...and promptly had no idea what to do or where to go. So much of today is trying to find either accommodations for the night, or a ride to the border or beyond. They got to a hostel and no beds unfortunately, but were able to take showers after 3 days. Can only imagine that relief that felt like. Good that they finally have power and internet again.

Been messaging away on various FB groups and trying to find something online. Not a lot of information on Ternopil in English, so the 3 of them are doing their best to find something or talk to someone who can help them. Hopefully they can find something or someone will respond to one of the FB message I wrote.

The next 2 biggest challenges will be getting to the Polish border. Then once crossing it, getting to either a train station or city. Ultimately I am very happy they are safe for now. Big relief.

Is there a way to find out whether those bus routes from Lviv to Poland still run? A route from Melitopol (conquered by Russia I know) appears to go through Ternopil. If you locate Ternopil bus station in Google maps, there are departure times for services to Warsaw

Uncredited source so take with big pinches of salt, and even if valid it's just just opinion of one FSB analys, but an extremely interesting read touching on a lot topics, so I would still highly recommend reading it.

Basicly "confirming" many previously speculated things, including that the FSB and the military were kept largely in the dark until the attack actually started, meaning real preparations were not made and the Russian forces in Ukraine might be on the verge of collapse due to severe logistics issues.

Also "confirmation" that the Russian leadership was largely working on BS intelligence, provided by analysts who thought they were expected to deliver info telling everything would be hypothetically fine, all hail mother Russia, instead of proper detailed analysis.
