Was the ask a 1st + Zharovsky - or Flames just looking for a top prospect here and it would be a lesser pick?
Also any insight into what the ask is for Coleman..is it first team to offer a 1st gets Coleman or are Flames looking for more?

Yeah, that’s my point - because he never plays.

I’d do 1 for 1 and then for retention I’d ask for a pick depending on the extent of the retained amount (1st for 50%, down to a 3rd for like 10-20%)

Kadri is not impeding this team from free falling in the standings.
There are 2 main reasons the Flames will have a tough time bottoming out.
1) Flames goaltending most nights is as good or better than their opponents.
2) Between Vancouver and the Rangers, there is zero chance the Flames will be that bad....and both those clubs are not done selling off.
Kadri is way down the list as far as that goes.
Also even if they deal him, there will be someone getting his minutes and will contribute even if not at a NK pace.

Which is fine so long as they keep the Oilers from getting into the postseason. I don’t care how many games a team wins after eliminating the Oilers, just so long as the Oilers don’t make the postseason or are eliminated in short order.

No reason the Flames couldn't outsuck the Rangers, especially if they move Kadri. Not like Rangers don't have a great goalie themselves in Shesterkin.

Rangers dropped like a rock when Shesterkin got hurt and Quick couldn't stop a beachball, but he's back since the break and should help them climb ahead of the Flames.

Let's not be too hard on Quick. He can too stop a beach ball. You just have to roll it towards him very slowly.

18-12-6 with Shesterkin, 4-14-2 with Quick

They need some grit and edge to get over the hump in the playoffs.
They have the picks and assets the Flames would covet.
They have a cap dump that would work for the Flames that helps balance the salary considerations (Kotkaniemi) but still fits what the Flames are trying to do since he's only 25.
Kadri
2026 2nd UTA
for
Kotkaniemi
2026 1st Dallas
2028 1st (Dallas or Carolina)
Cerrato or Ryabkin (Would be kind of nice to have Cerrato who is playing with McKenna right now)
Get another first in 2028, upgrade the UTA 2nd round pick to the Dallas 1st, and get a recent 2nd round pick center prospect that gives you another bullet in the chamber at C.
And I still think Kotkaniemi can be a contributing piece in a bottom 6 role while the young centers develop.
|
I don't think you would get that much for Kadri. I think it would be Kotkaniemi + 1st and that would be all. Just my opinion of course.

Some posters are highly overvaluing Kadri. Too much term left to get blue chip assets back.

And the Flames would need to retain to get anything of value, which there's an apparent reluctance to do with Kadri.

The problem is the retention/retention spot alone might be worth the value they are being offered...so why bother?

Better off taking a negative asset back. If they can get a first and a bad contact back they should pull the trigger. Particularly anything with less than two years in term. I still feel Laine would be an ideal candidate. Laine + Wifi + first for Kadri + Pahal + Lomberg. Something along those lines.

GMs doing a good job keeping their chatter under wraps this year. Even when there have been deals nothing has surfaced until the deal is done and they are taking it to the player. Setting up for a good final stretch I hope

You'd get another piece, especially if you're taking back Kotkaniemi.

Montreal, Carolina and Seattle could be reasonable destinations for Kadri,
Montreal
Key players locked in and have some bad contracts coming off before Kadri's deal would be a liability. Kadri would bring experience and grit to a young team learning how to win.
To MTL
Kadri
To CGY
Laine
2027 1st
Xhekaj
or
Laine
2026 or 2027 2nd
Zharovsky
Seattle
Have the cap space and having to make future signings won't significantly impacted by duration of Kadri's deal. Brings an instant update to the offence of Seattle's forward group and they have multiple 1st round picks in the next two drafts.
To Seattle
Kadri
To CGY
2027 1st (TB)
Villenueve (or Miettinen)
Carolina
Have cap space and are in a win now position. Kadri brings experience and scoring and grit to that line up.
To CAR
Kadri
To CGY
Kotkaniemi
2026 or 2027 1st
