Definitely. A lot of contenders only want rentals because they only want immediate help while having flexibility the following season to re-sign players, sign new free agents, or make more thought out long term trades. In fact, I think that is most of the time, so if they are getting additional years for a player on the wrong side of 30, I think it reduces the player's value.

Ideal scenario is the Blues not trading Thomas until the off-season to help prevent them from overtaking the Flames draft position.

Rangers, Flames and St. Louis have to be calling each other to remain strong. Don’t give in and give them up for peanuts.

The bigger name might be Crosby. Which isn't true of every deadline. Montreal, in particular, would be foolish to deal away assets that might be needed to get Crosby in the summer.

Don't make that wish on a monkey paw because you were way too vague about that and an injury is also a reason why a player doesn't come back out for the next period.

Coleman certainly might play but if he was sitting out I don't think the Flames would announce it now. They are trying to play it cool like we don't need to trade the guy so lets see a real offer

...because he's been traded. (Just a useful addition to exempt the other, more painful possibility. And probably not because he's taking a ####.)

If the flames make like 3 more trades in the next 24 hours I’ll be convinced it’s not a rebuild

Was really hoping both Kadri would be moved, but was not expecting Weegar to be moved. I'd be content with Coleman being moved too. If all 3 of Weegar, Kadri and Coleman are moved, I'd be very happy. Honestly, not even too worried about the return, just want to see a serious tankjob to close out the season.
I'd rather see the Flames move Kadri for a slightly less return than put their draft position at risk. Top 3 vs non-top 3 is huge this year.

I can’t see Kadri being traded at all now. I think it was always a stretch that he would be traded with his contract being what it is no matter how good he is. I suspect he’s here for the long haul now.

Only issue with this is how much a factor the lottery is and 32nd is locked up by Vancouver

2nd last has a 60ish percent chance of a top 3 pick.
3rd last has a 30ish percent chance of a top 3 pick.
4th last has a 20ish percent chance of a top 3 pick.
5th last has a 17-18ish percent chance of a top 3 pick.
There's no reason the Flames shouldn't be able to secure 2nd last. The Rangers, Blues, Blackhawks, and Jets all have much better teams and easier schedules. The Flames are currently 1 point out of 2nd last place.
