For what? They’d need to be peace officers at least, with authority to detain someone to prevent further damage. A security guard is not going to stop brazen criminal activity.

Well they're installing the steel cables so how about the proposition of an additional compromise?

Pretty annoyed by the Peace Bridge repair work. They blocked off the main N/S path with construction fence to use it as a staging area, but it sits mostly empty and unused. They've moved the fences on the bridge inward, presumably to give space to work. But it's been like this for 2 weeks and all they've done is remove the old panels. I don't understand why they need to do both sides at once, as well. They could have left half the bridge open and done one side at a time, but I guess that would take some brain power and respect for users.

The blocking of the pathway on the south side is absolutely stupid. Argument could have been made to have temporarily closed the heliport instead. I'm guessing that may have been a mess of regulations since you'd have to get Transport Canada involved. Or why not stage on the grass area just west of the helipad?

This should be a get in, get it done, get out project. Setting up at least 2 weeks before work is even ready to begin is bull####, and whoever is in charge of this needs to be dunked in the Bow a few times.

Don't worry, they'll be done by the end of fall 2024.

I swear the city does things like this to piss people off. Like a middle finger to people. The bar to close down paths/roads is far too low. Even worse when its a private development. ###### developer closing a lane for 6 months so they can have 3 spots to park their commuter vehicle 2 feet from the jobsite.

Oh man, that pissed me off with the work on 7th st. Half the time an entire lane was closed and no alternative for cyclists so....the security guard could park his hatchback there. Construction workers parking their personal vehicles in the bike lane while the absolutely pathetic bike lane detour was full of snow, forcing us into the narrow traffic lane. There are parking lots all over the place, but no, this was special construction worker and security guard parking. ####ing pathetic.

Yeah it's nuts downtown. One thing I really wish the city did better was regulating all the private/third-party closures. They're getting out of hand with just doing whatever the hell they want. They'll have a permit for a single lane for half a block, they'll take two for a whole block + a bike lane, and it just never gets addressed

Oh and I ran into two more of these just now. One in Marda loop, just a 40 m stretch than makes everyone squeeze in to the right lane just so they can go back 40 m later. Not a worker or indication in sight. Not a hole in the road or dead body, just the city being pieces of crap. Hell maybe its a fossil fuel activist thing (that would actually be brilliant). It backed up traffic brutally into gridlock in Marda (the emissions of idling cars and pissed off pedestrians was worth it).
and ya I took that while driving. DGAF.

I hope that isn't as large for you as me.

Anyone using a browser that doesn't auto-resize pictures deserves to have their screen blown up anyway
Edit: Pro tip though, if you don't like closures you're going to want to avoid that road entirely for the next like, year and a half. We were given a heads up a few weeks ago about emergency access on 33rd and it sounds like it's going to be a mess, the city wants to get two birds stoned at once so they're doing a large capital project + Enmax has a large job in the area as well, so they want to do both at the same time. 33rd and 34th are going to be a ####show for a while (I mean more than it already was, god that area sucks)

Grad season is fast approaching, I wonder if the Peace bridge will still be a draw given its current visual state?

I know it’s the complaining about bridges thread, but there are literally 2 other bridges on either side within 500m of the Peace Bridge. Are they closed or is this a huge detour?

Peace bridge is still open, and when walking or less so on a bike 500 meters is a noticeable detour if you need to do it.
My question pertains to how the bridge itself doesn't look very good right now with grey construction fencing and spruce 2x4 supports blocking off the two sides. Wonder if grads will still want photos on it.

Yes, they do! A few were out yesterday blocking the last remaining bit of passage, to get photos with a bunch of wire fence and 2x6's. I'm not sure there is much hope for the future of youths saving us.
