Here is my recent opinion on Sam. He’s doing well, but he isn’t an elite player. I’m happy for him. He needed to move and has embraced that. But he’s also one of the biggest busts in the last 20 years. He got us a prospect and a pick. Maybe they will turn out to something. But likely not. Cutting bait with him was more than time to do so.

Way too nuanced.
ETA: just noticed the bust thing. Nah, can’t agree with that, not in the league, nor on this team. He’s not a top 4 guy, but he’s not a bust.

I'm far from the biggest Bennett supporter, but one of the biggest busts in the last 20 years? I find that's a stretch.
It's fine that Bennett got traded, I'm more concerned with the return.
Greg Nemisz. Wasn’t even hard to think of a bigger bust.
Really? The 25th pick from the 2008 draft? Nemisz was never projected to be anything more than a middling forward. Really never was a player of consequence at any level, so how could you hold out such high hopes for him? Compared to the highest draft pick in Calgary history, and a guy that was supposed to be in the same class or better than Draisaitl? I could have maybe agreed with you on Rico Fata, or Eric Nystrom, or even Brent Krahn, but Greg Nemisz??? Did you forget some green text?
I don't even mind Bennett as a player but he's not a saviour. He's a nice player to have around and he can help on the right line. Florida can thrive with him because they're more than capable of killing penalties and coming up with timely goals in response to PPGs against. Calgary wasn't able to use him in the same way, especially with another penalty machine in Tkachuk already in the top six. Calgary isn't as deep as Florida and doesn't have the same environment to enable Bennett to succeed.
He's still nowhere close to living up to his draft position.
4OA forwards since 1990:
Paul Kariya
Nicklas Backstrom
Mitch Marner
Brady Tkachuk
Mike Ricci
Andrew Ladd
Evander Kane
Ryan Johansen
Stephen Weiss
Sam Bennett
Jesse Puljujarvi
Benoit Pouliot
Chad Kilger
Todd Warriner
Nikolai Zherdev
Jason Bonsignore
Alexandre Volchkov
Pavel Brendl
9 are better, 7 are worse...Sam and JP are pretty much median.
Maybe his career plays out like Pouliot's...a few flashes but never puts it together. But it wouldn't be at all surprising if he carves out a Ricci like role for another decade.

This is my favourite argument...Bennett is soooo bad that he killed his team by having to miss a game...
Game 1 was very rough and had several dirty plays...NHL wheel of justice came up snake eyes for Bennett. Tampa tied the game on that powerplay...one of 9 goals in the game. Bennett took 2 of the 17 penalties in that game.
Sam's team lost to the defending champs who went on to repeat.
If we go back were you advocating to expose Monahan prior to the expansion draft. If not easy to say what is smart and not smart with the benefit of 20/20
This is why you hire smart people in management, because they can evaluate, anticipate and forecast since that’s what they do for a living. They knew if Monahan was going to have another bad offensive season, which was very probable based on how his game has been trending since the calendar year of 2019, then they should’ve been more proactive.
I’ll say this, if Monahan does indeed need to be bought out this coming offseason and that dead cap space either prevents the Flames from re-signing one of their important pieces or if it costs them an valued roster player in the process, then that’s a big failure by this team’s braintrust. How they could let an asset go from great to good to bad to buyout would be such a fail.

I don’t see how Monahan’s injury-related decline can be viewed as a management “fail”. At the time he got the big contract it wasn’t considered overspending, and it’s not like he’s pulling a James Neal now.

I would say the vast majority of fans and talking heads were surprised they got that much at the time. Some revisionist history after his hot run last season.
This year he has been decent but also makes decent money
Where are the Iraq information ministers to defend this one?
For someone who tends to keep the forum in check I think this comment is a little unfair. Just because I like Bennett as a player is a choice I shouldn't have to be called an "Iraq information minister". Seriously if you hate the player that much why take it out on other posters because they might like the player?

Do you not see what your doing?
I think he is a pretty good player just that some people on here spin everything he does.
Read some posts...his playoff suspension was just bad luck, roll of the dice. He didn't really cost them with those bad penalties because excuse A and excuse B ect.
Monahan is lucky to be in the NHL but 3 more points on a top line Bennett is an elite center now.
As usual the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Penalties, injuries, suspensions, the guy has trouble staying on the ice and between the ears. To deny that despite mountains of evidence reminds me of a certain information minister is all. Look at this head hit, offensive zone, team leading, totally unnecessary and will likely cost him a game or two.

I'll play. Not much different than the Trouba hits.
Nothing particularly reckless about it...kind of a weird one where I don't think it warranted a 2 minute penalty but I also wouldn't be outraged if he got 1 game.
It looked like it was possibly charging. It's hard to see how many strides he took before making the hit, but he sure did come from pretty far away to specifically target Paquette. Looked like a dirty hit to me.
Not like oh my god, he is the devil incarnate, but still pretty nasty in my opinion. Making the head the first point of contact I think was circumstantial since Paquette had his head down and leaning out, so maybe that wasn't Bennett's intent, but he does play on the edge, so I wouldn't put it past him.

I’ll play too. He comes in skating an arc, angling appropriately and making a check. Trouba skated straight through guys.
Sam hits him solidly and gets a lot of chest and also unfortunately Paquette’s head is down.
It’s not particularly egregious, more like a hockey play gone wrong, but because he made contact with the head I could see a game as well, and have no issue with that

Okay fair enough, a more balanced assessment.
Lucic got suspended a couple of times too and was taking boneheaded penalties, same with Backlund but we are not calling posters out. Shouldn't let it get personal. Some of the Bennett supporters are probably good people with families they certainly are not Iraq information ministers. We are all Flames fans and Bennett needs to stop trying to piss off the Flames fans with his boneheaded penalties.
