Shelton Souray should be added to that list too. He was a guy in summer of 2007 who proudly said to the media that he wanted to dismiss this stigma where nobody wanted to sign with the Oilers and in an effort to prove everyone wrong, he signed a 5 year deal deal with them. Fast forward to his 3rd season, He was permanently demoted to the AHL and shared some unflattering words for the organization. Tambellini also shot back in the media too. Souray was bought out in the summer of 2010.
Hopefully that was one of the case studies among NHL agents. Everyone seemed to have gotten the message except for Lucic

You see this poor organizational reputation manifest itself in the case of a highly-coveted college free agent Spencer Foo, who while not yet established nonetheless spurred the advances of the hometown squad. It's where young careers go to die.
So No Good.

Good quote from Miller:
"All these race horses they have are going to be asked to drag a plow."
You can argue how many "race horses" they actually have and most of them are donkeys that think they're thoroughbreds.

So the new coach's strategy is to play McDavid 24 minutes a game? Did someone tell Hitchcock that was the last coach's master plan? Really that's the reality as they are going to have to play McDavid as much as possible and if he gets injured or breaks down they can focus on what they do best which is winning draft lotteries.

Anytime an Oilers fan brings up 5 Cups versus 1 argument, they need to be reminded that every 1st overall pick a team has cancels out the value of one Cup win so we're actually tied in Cup victories! ;-)

Craig Button blasting a GM for poor drafting and trading is kinda hilarious, if it didn't sting so bad. "Hello pot? This is kettle. Your black."

I really hope Hitch keeps the Oilers in the Goldilocks zone this season where they're not quite good enough to make the playoffs but not quite bad enough to draft a player that even they can't screw up.
Coming into the US Thanksgiving barometer they're looking just about right.

Yup. Not surprisingly, McDingleberry had a hand in 3 of Edmonton's 4 goals last night. He really is all they have.

Gord Miller mentions the Hawks, Kings from years past, the Lightning and Predators of now as teams that have 7-9 players that are either drafted past the first round or undrafted free agents.
Flames have ...
Andersson
Brodie
Dube
Gaudreau
as players past the first round
and
Giordano
Rittich
Hathaway
as undrafted free agent signings
for 7 as well.
Not sure Czarnik counts (undrafted, but 2nd team)

Look at how they treated their heart and soul guy, Ryan Smyth. Traded over a $100K difference IIRC. Though I think he probably forgave them because he never seemed that bright to me.

They also turned a later round pick (Ferland) into Lindholm.

I think the question is going to get asked around how much longer does McDavid stay around this gong show?
Unless the guy scores 2+ PPG they can't win.
10 wins - McDavid has 21 points
11 losses - McDavid has 10 points
When McDavid is a PPG player the Oilers lose, McDavid has to be a 2 PPG player for them to have a shot at winning the game.
It's actually ridiculous how poor of a team they built around that guy, and how he still puts up those numbers.
In summary - Edmonton is no good.

This is a great point. The Ferland selection at #133 overall doesn't get talked about enough of a really great pick. As you say - they turned that into a core guy now signed long-term.
Arguably the best pick in the last decade outside of Johnny.
As an aside - that draft had some steals in the 5th round: Klingberg at #131, Gallagher at #147 and Ferland. And then Ottawa nabbed Mark Stone way down at #178, and Carolina plucked Freddie Anderson at #187 but never signed him (re-entered & moved up to the third round).

Derek Wills yesterday in the afternoon said that the Oilers have one player that's definitely better than any Flame, and another (Drai) that is also arguably better than any Flame when he is motivated. that was a little jarring coming from the home station. I wonder if a broader media survey would agree with that, cause I'd probably slot the German McLeech behind Johnny and Matty, i.e. two guys that clearly drive their own line.

To whiff as badly as the Oilers did in 2012 with their first two picks (Nail Yakupov as the top overall pick followed by Mitch Moroz in round 2) just is a double whammy that is difficult to recover from.
/Looks good on that smug organization
