That list of verified dupes has to be worth quite a bit to telemarketers, etc. The City should sell it on the sly.
Also, if they have to go through the whole verification process, even for such a relatively small number of signatures, the entire cost should be totalled and divided amongst the signatories to pay.

Haha. The City selling it to telemarketers in order to pay for this would be magnificent.

And now the goof is on TV whining about the legislation. He wants the numbers needed for a successful recall to be changed.
Because having a politician recalled every time small group of people is unhappy (and 70 000/ 1.2 million is small) makes sense. There will always be a small group unhappy with a policy or tax rate or whatever. We would constantly be voting in by-elections.
If you don't like the direction a politician is going, you vote them out at the next election. You don't constantly switch them up every time they do something you don't like.

Farkas got more votes than that and he isn’t the mayor, but they think that should be enough to get the mayor out?
Ooooook.
But sure, change the legislation and make the bar 50k. Let’s see how long Smith lasts. And then the next person. And the next person. And the next person.
Maybe then these dummies would realize that the bar is high because the circumstances should be exceptional. Not just, “some people don’t like them.”

The recall figures might be based on the last election, but the actual population is even higher than that now. Calgary proper was at 1.389M people this time last year and there's at least 33k more people that have moved here since then based on GoA figures.

That number was just a guess based on what I thought the population was.
Regardless, assuming every signature was legit, it's a small percentage of Calgary citizens. The idea that we have a by-election every time a small number of people don't like something the government does, is just ridiculous.

I dunno, I'm kinda curious to see them validate the signatures so we can find out that those 70k lines of ink are actually only 30k individuals who were even eligible to sign.

I for one, won't be surprised at all when we learn that half of the signatories are from Airdrie or Okotoks.

How hard can it be to get 40 percent of a group of people to sign something in situations where there’s almost no risk of losing their livelihood by doing so?

So, does that mean I could submit a FOIP request and get a list of every name and phone number who signed it?
That would be really beneficial for my multi-level marketing business.

I wouldn’t be surprised. One of the nut jobs parked next to me at Costco last week and I saw a total of one person go and sign.
The exercise had really proven to me how something is way more blown up by social media than in real life if this is getting so much press and attention and the guy only managed 70k signatures.

Once you cut the duplicates you’re easily down to 50k. Then remove the Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks, Chestermere, and Strathmore crowd and you’re down to 20k. Then cut the illegible and it’s probably 10k. Then cut the fake names and there’s probably 2,000 valid signatures in there.

Maybe we should change the recall mechanism.
Say you dont like the current mayor, you should be able to remove them. But instead of collecting signatures every couple of months like this clown. You instead have to wait a certain amount of time...lets say two..no, three years (dont want to do this too often, costs too much and nothing would get done). And its not signatures you need but something else, maybe they have to write your name on a piece of paper or something...we can call them...i dunno...maybe call them votes. And everyone can participate in it, if they are eligible.

Recall Gondek organizer says he’s found his next recall target
Quote:
The organizer of the petition to recall Calgary’s mayor says he’s moving on to another target.
A day after handing in what he says were more than 70,000 signatures from Calgarians who want mayor Jyoti Gondek removed, Landon Johnston says he’s shifting his focus to his city councillor Peter Demong.
|
Quote:
“It would be a lot easier for him just to resign now,” says Johnston. “We can wait for the legislation to change, or we can do it with the current legislation.”

Can we start a petition to recall Johnston? If we get enough signatures, he has to move away and we can choose someone better for a citizen.
