I am pretty sure this was because of 21 Savage not wanting to hug anyone. Could be some phobia or something. When Gillis wanted to hug him, he just pulled back and stretched his arms. It did look a bit bizarre, actually.

I thought Gillis episode was good. The cold open was terrible (really missing the big horses for the political impressions) and the monologue was a littttttttle dicey, but I thought most of the sketches were good. Some odd tension sometimes it seemed, especially at the end everyone was weirdly standing like 8 feet behind Gillis, felt like it was a joke or something? I dunno seemed strange.
I know he goes a little offside sometimes, but I enjoy Gillis. His Trump is awesome they should have him do it through the election.
I liked the cold open.
The show is so much better when comedians are the host. it just hits better.
I just think it's laying it on a bit thick while not having the grace of McKinnon doing a one person show as Lindsay Graham, so it just comes across kinda lame and weak. None of the individual impressions are very funny and the dialogue is basically just the news.
Anyways I did enjoy the rest of the show. The Jamaican church, Rock Bottom Kings, Workplace HR, Trump Sneakers, Fugliana, Packers Buttplug and Forrest Gump reunion were all good. I thought all the sketches really played into Gillis' style.
I was watching some sketches from the recent past. McKinnon, Bryant, Bennett, Moffat, Redd all missing makes a big difference. Others with grow and be added, but it's a thin group right now. Sherman and Yang are the only ones that holds much of a candle to the top performers of the past IMO.
The big issue this week was the writing and creativity. It was just a weak episode and they went with very stereotypical humor with a good looking host. I didn't watch all of it and I don't remember all the sketches but there was a cheerleader one, a wedding/make up one, a Hooters one, Bowen's straight. It just wasn't interesting or funny and overall it seemed really lazy.
Papyrus is still one of my favorite digital shorts.
