Luckily the core and vast majority of the neighborhoods are on high ground, but much of the important infrastructure is not. Power plant, arena, ball field, police station, courthouse, city hall, and public library are all beside the river, along with the flats and riverside neighbourhoods. Last I heard ~4000 people evacuated.

The flats are a lower income area, and many of my friends are affected with their young families. I wish I could be there to help.

This might have something to do with why downtown will be shutdown tomorrow (Macleod at the stampede grounds is missing 2 lanes):

I saw some millitary vehicles on Stoney trail. It was a little unsettling. I know they're here to help and they're doing a great service... but seeing millitary on the streets is usually a sign of unrest of some sort. I've never actually with my own eyes witness millitary rolling around civilian streets, so maybe that plays a part too. Had I spent time in Edmonton or any other city with a millitary presence maybe not such a big deal.

Some troops just came through S'more about 30 minutes ago. All the traffic on the TCH started honking and waving to them, giving them the thumbs up.

I never did seem confirmation of that looting tweet in Bowness but saw this:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...ures-list.html

Looting concerns

Police Chief Rick Hanson says earlier reports Friday of looting have been checked out, but found to be false. He says there are huge numbers of officers patrolling the evacuated areas right now.

How old are you? Cuz up till 1998 you couldn't swing a dead cat without seeing a military presence in Calgary.

I find it comforting knowing they are on scene.

I sorta see what you are saying but it isn't like there are soldiers standing at every intersection with a loaded rifle. This is a lot different than having martial law declared.

That'll teach you to park illegally/without paying. And for leaving your vehicle unattended in Victoria Park of all places!!

Does anyone know if there is anywhere to donate items which are not necessarily of an immediate need? I have a mattress set, futon and TV / DVD player to donate, but I'm not sure where to donate these (if they are needed at any point)

My office a couple blocks west of Husky just sent an email saying business as usual if you can make it to the office. Considering the LRT is still down as are bunch of major roads, I'm not really sure I agree with their assessment here.

Probably a strange question, but I don't really follow baseball. I assume that's sports wrap/tape? Or did he have a horrible injury?

I just left the Stampede Grounds and walked around the infield, grandstand and the barns. Those are the HARDEST hit areas if the grounds by far. The Grandstand has about 1" of silt in the lobby you can skate on it because its that slippery. The tunnel to get to the infield is totally flooded and turn #1 of the track is totally washed out.

I honestly do not know how they are going to have everything operational.

I think what they mean is that if you can make it to work, they need work to be done. If you can't, then nobody's going to be pissed off.
I don't want to sound like a dick, but you are aware that life must go on, right? At some point, it will be business as usual. Companies aren't going to just turn off the lights and take a week off. This flood sucks, but the world is still turning. No need to make it worse by shutting down needlessly.

And I'm pretty sure that most employers are going to be sympathetic to people who were directly affected by this flood. If your wardrobe and razor is currently submerged, you're probably allowed to take a few days off. If you live in Bridlewood, and the extent of your inconvenience is having to transfer from the train to a bus, then you should probably get your ass to work and cover for the people that are at home pumping water out of their houses.

I'm intrigued as to the impact on the economy. Been thinking about this for a while. Trades will certainly be busy off their feet doing repairs and maintenance in all the houses. Think of all these million dollar houses that will require tons of work. Also the regular houses and roads, etc. Surely there's some stimulus from that aspect.

That said, I'm a salaried employee and will be collecting my pay but perhaps being less efficient / productive working from home. There will likely be some people that are not being paid if they can't work. Other places will suffer loss of income (zoo, restaurants, stampede, etc). A boom for the trades and local suppliers of materials but no one else?

If your record collection was damaged - go to Inner Sleeve

Quote:
For some people, having their record collections damaged can be as devastating as damage to photo albums or other personal collections.
If you or those you know have had their records damaged in the floods, let us know...we are planning to set up a free record cleaning clinic and to help us plan it properly we would like to know how many people/records are in this situation. Thanks!

It's just taped ankles. Many athletes do it across all sports as a comfort or precautionary thing
