I would guess that has more to do with Murray Edwards rather than Conroy

Hmm, retaining $10.5M is a tall ask TBH.

I'd expect a huge return if they are getting Kadri for $3.5M.

If the return is a 1st + Propsect then I'm not sure I'd be willing to retain 50%.

If I'm retaining 50% and paying $10.5M for him to help you win a cup then I'd want another 1st round pick on top of that.

My guess is teams are willing to pay the price Conroy wants for Kadri without retention, but want retention.

And aren't willing to pay the price that Conroy actually would want for full retention.

My guess is Flames also more likely to be retain like $1.5M per season (bringing Kadri down to $5.5M, and $4.5M total cost) instead of the full retention ($3.5M cost of Kadri, $10.5M of total cost).

Shopping to find 1 deal without retention for the 2 of them is my guess /hope

My sense is the Habs will continue to keep tabs on the Nazem Kadri situation, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Montreal has at least checked in on the Vincent Trocheck situation as well. Again, I don’t think the Habs will force anything before the deadline — they are trying to be very patient — but if trading for a top-six forward makes sense at a price point they’re comfortable with, they will look at it.

I still think the Colorado Avalanche make the most sense for Kadri, but I think the Avs would need Calgary to retain on Kadri’s remaining contract (three more years after this season at a $7 million average annual value). In fact, I would imagine any team thinking of trading for Kadri would want that from the Flames, and I’m not sure where Calgary would land on being willing to do that.

It depends on the amount of retention. If the Flames aren't willing to retain even a little bit on that contract, they can't expect to trade him (or trade him for value). Retention is a necessity to entertain a trade to begin with.

Doesn't make sense to me why they can't retain on Kadri and take a contract back when trading Coleman

I think there could be a just as big of a market for Kadri in the offseason when the cap goes up, retention spots open up, and teams turnover some of their roster players. It's not a great free agency class either, so teams might be more into making trade.

Plus there seems to be the trend for teams to trade draft picks in later years, so it might not even make a difference.

Per Dreger

Kadri - one team in west and one team in east with decent offers that he will not go to. Avs and Habs would jump immediately if Conroy would retain. There is a pecking order and Kadri is behind Trocheck and Thomas. Unwillingness to retain and not sure if that will change between now and Friday afternoon. Offers are "reasonable".

Coleman - near top if not at top for wingers on the market. Somebody close to Coleman said last night "not sure we don't know a lot". Coleman happy to move in interest of Calgary.
