Finding the guy barely even matters. He's a vagrant. It's not like he'll be able to pay for the damage. He can't even pay a fine. So, what, we throw him in the slammer for 30 days?
That's it. Experiment over. Throw up some railings and call it a day. Calgarians can't handle the art project. Let's try again in 50 years. What a downer.

Community service, as FlameOn says. Do they even do that anymore? I remember working with people who were doing community service when I was a university student on one of my summer jobs. For those who are homeless maybe there in an opportunity to give them a decent meal at the same time, and it keeps them off the street for awhile anyhow.

Okay...I'll preface this by saying "Locke does not condone or endorse this idea!"
But, you know...just put his name on a list for all the drop-in centers and just let Winter take care of the rest.
"Oh...you're Daniel McBridgeVandal? Sorry, we cant let you in."
- But its going to be -30 tonight...
"Yes. Yes it is."

I think you do need to show some sort of public punishment. It may not help deter the homeless or the mentally ill, but it will at least warn others (ie. bored/angsty teenagers) that there are consequences, and demonstrates to your citizens that it is not acceptable to deface public property.
I think it's important to show that the little stuff matters (even if in this case, it's not small). Graffiti, littering, dog crap...it all adds up. Let it go and it erodes civic pride and encourages even worse behaviour. Let's not turn into San Francisco.

This person cannot hold down a basic job or handle the basic requirements to have a life (for whatever reason). you think they will diligently show up for their community service?

Yes, but with a guy like this there are so few punishments that do anything. At most you just piss everyone off because how do you punish a guy with a net worth of $0 in a way that satisfies all of us who are footing the $750,000 bill? I agree he needs to be punished, as do all delinquents. So, sure, fine him the max (knowing he can't pay) and then put him in jail, I guess, for non-payment. Really, though, it's whack-a-mole. Another bum will pop up doing something else costly and ridiculous tomorrow. We need to be getting these guys off the streets. We can disagree with how that's done, but the problem is drugged out, mentally ill people living on river banks with nothing to do except cause problems.
Housing first could work but I think you need to design a low cost durable bachelor suite that kinda of sucks.
It can’t be just a shelter because that just concentrates them. It can’t be too nice or it leads to dependency and you need to implement Canada wide to avoid becoming a destination.
The concept is sound. Get people off of streets then work on treatment

There is literally curved panels in the video that you linked.
You know that this will wind up being painted chainlink fence when all is said and done.
Yea but they didn't smash the curved panels on the top of the shelter once... So not sure if it's the same stuff as the sides. Company mentions similar costs to glass. There a reason why this stuff wouldn't work?
They could also hire security for way less than cost of replacement. I would rather curved hammer glass. But some mentally ill person would take that as a personal challenge to break it and run a golf car through the glass or something.
So the bridge has both pedestrian lanes closed, now everyone squeezed to the "bike lane" which is now a walking lane. Thanks a lot, ####face. Can we bring back the pillory so we can all throw rotten tomatoes at his stupid head? Ugh.

I don't understand why they've done this, couldn't they leave a little space on the pedestrian sections to keep the bike lane relatively clear? Sadly I will be avoiding it on my commutes now because of this.

Ya, they had temporary barriers up until yesterday, I thought they would come up with a sane solution. But they put a fairly significant barrier up, so it looks like it will be this way for awhile. I'll be using the LRT bridge from now on, as walking a bike is awkward with all the people now. And since they are searching for a replacement material, it could be like this for a long long time.
So the person who did this is a 58 year old guy. Can you imagine walking around at 4 am and breaking public property at that age?
I hope he gets some real jail time out of this cause that’s a lot of damage and inconvenience to a lot of people until it gets fixed.

I'm about that age and it is lucky if I am awake at 4pm.
Although to be fair, it isn't as if old guys are staying up until 4 am, they are probably getting up at that time and wondering why the young'uns are still sleeping. Boomers!

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

If I was 58 and living on the street with possible mental health and/or substance abuse issues I could imagine doing that. It’s not like he’s some average middle aged dude who decided one night to be an ####### and smash #### up. I could be wrong but I see so many ####ed up people, yelling at the voices in their head, or barely able to function, or worse, in the inner city that he’s not atypical at all.
They need help, not scorn. And they need the help before they become lost causes. Whatever this guy’s issues are, assuming they could have been fixed, I doubt they would have cost anywhere near what we’re paying to replace that glass.

Yeah, maybe the guy has issues but it’s possible also that he doesn’t and has little regard for others or property.
There’s a guy who set a bunch of fires in the NW recently and burned down a couple garages and a house, or that couple with the pit bulls who killed that lady. And now they’re refusing to hand over a couple of their dogs. Do they have issues as well?
Maybe we need to pump the brakes a bit and not roll out the mental health and addictions so fast.
Walked over the bridge last night. They've put up temporary metal fencing on both sides. Really sucks if you were a tourist in town and this is the visual you get for any pictures on the bridge.
