Thanks for that, I've got a couple that I actually kept as I figured I'd get more from that than selling online.

I tried to enter my 6S+ serial number and it said I wasn't eligible.

Weird. I added my wife’s 6S (regular size) and it worked. Maybe you got a 1/I or O/0 mixed up?

Anyone playing around with Delta Emulator on your iPhone? Works pretty well! Going to bust out some of the old Nintendo classics.

Same with my iPhone 6. There is no indication as to why it's not applicable.

It's new iPhone announcement day, and thanks to AI I'm finally interested after years of shoulder shrugging. Pray for my friends and family, as I'm about to become insufferable.

What about AI intrigues you? I haven't touched iOS 18 yet so I have no idea what it offers.

AI will not be available from the iphones right away. Maybe a few months to the rest of the year. Most features will not be released until v18.1 and only in the US to start. Maybe Canada but not the EU.

I may upgrade my iPhone as I would like the 5x optical zoom vs my current 3x.

Sleep apnea detection for the new Apple watch is cool.

No new iPads? Was thinking of getting my wife a larger one for her birthday, I guess that makes it easy as I don't have to wait for something new.

I use ChatGPT quite a lot in my day to day, and I've found it cuts down my email time considerably. The ability to have a small LLM (chatbot) within the phone that works across the entire ecosystem wherever there's a text field is highly intriguing.

For example, today I walked past a truck for a fireplace maintenance company, which reminded me I told my wife I'd get ours sorted before fall. So I went over to their site and filled out their quote form. As I was walking, I dictated the comment section using the microphone, which was obviously riddled with grammatical errors and stumbles.

With AI (as it's advertised from Apple), I could essentially just highlight it and say "fix that" and it would sweep everything. More likely though, I wouldn't even dictate it fully and would just more likely give a stream of conscious bullet-point thoughts and then have it form it into a coherent paragraph.

I'm also highly weird about my notifications, and early reports from people trying out iOS18 have pointed to the AI notification summaries as one of the best features. Having important things dynamically float to the top and say "Bill needs an answer on that trip" just tickles the part of my brain that requires the world to get a little quieter.

Also I've always loved the concept of Siri. I use it more than most, and it's almost always disappointing. A big thing about ChatGPT is the conversational nature of it, which Siri has always lacked. Being able to plan a calendar event and go back and forth instead of having to give it all details in one frantic word salad is something that matters to me.

There is the whole "apps will intelligently talk to other apps" thing which will be magical, but as mentioned I wouldn't expect that until maybe next year. Still, when it comes to this kind of stuff, I'm very much an early adopter.

They're not exactly nailing the communication on what's coming when... it seems like Apple Intelligence is releasing in US English first and then Canadian English in December. To me that's just a regional setting on the phone that (as far as I know) just flags certain words as being spelled incorrectly, like colour or honour. At least in the beta, that's what Canadians had to change in the settings to get it to work on their devices, so I'm hoping that's the case here.

Ah ok, thanks for that on the iPads!

She was looking at the iPad Air 13" since she wants the bigger screen, but looking at the refurbs I could get a 5th gen iPad Pro 12.9" for about the same price and it would probably have a better screen (and cameras I guess but she thankfully doesn't take pictures with the iPad, maybe she knows I would mock her mercilessly). M1 instead of M2 processor but for her use she won't know the difference.

I’m coming due for a new phone in the next bit. Last year I said I would wait for the 16 Pro. This year… I don’t know, I wanted a bigger upgrade yet still.

The AI is a selling feature for sure. But part of me just wants to wait another year to see what the 17 Pro has to offer. I don’t want to grab the last model before a more significant design change comes to pass, but I also don’t want to wait forever for something that might be years away.

The newest ipads are oled. Other than that and the chip of course I do not see many differences. I don't think the oled screen is a huge improvement but I have only spent a short time with them. Thinner and lighter to I guess. Almost too much if ask me but better if you like cases.

The 15 Pro models will be much cheaper and support AI. If AI is the driver, I would explore a used 15 Pro model.

What worries me about this approach (and I’m happy to be wrong) is if anybody has messed around with AI locally on a computer, they’ll know it basically takes a high-end rig to run it any faster than molasses. I’ve been joking for years that Apple keeps making these Jesus-powerful devices just to run TikTok smoother, but this time there’s actually something that requires a shart-ton of horsepower.
