If somebody is tailgating 3' behind your bumper because you're going under the speed limit, they're doing so because you're going under the speed limit. If this is happening to you a lot, you probably need to pick up the pace.
i was going above the speed limit at the time, then he started to tailgate me and i went speed limit.
and no it doesnt happen all the time..
ALSO I COULD NOT GO ANY FASTER FOR MOST OF THE TIME because there was traffic right infront of me.
how can you even possibly defend tail gaiting? ffs

In the situation above, yeah the dude was in the wrong.
I can defend tailgating because it's my only available form of retaliation when some struggler in front of me is going 30 km/h under the speed limit or taking five hours to accelerate to the speed limit. If I could fire a heat seeker at those morons, I would, but the only thing I can do to let them know what a fool I think they are is to get up on their ass.

Location: A simple man leading a complicated life....
Exp:
I was in Calgary today to have lunch with a good friend. On my way over I come to a set of lights where this elderly lady is waiting to cross. The light turns red and I come to a stop. Some jackbot driving a Beemer thought he was going to beat the yellow but at the last second decides it's not safe and slams on the brakes.
Well, his car is covering the whole cross walk. The elderly lady has to walk behind his car to get across. As she walks past the back end of his car she raises her cane and gives the top of the trunk a good wallop leaving a nice dent. Guy gets out and starts cursing at the old lady. She just ignores him and keeps on walking.

Yep, even better when it is in the far left lane and continue to drive in that lane completely oblivious to the world.

The best is when the left lane is empty so you decide to move from the slow right lane, the suv in front of you decides to change into the left lane as well. You assume that they are going to speed up but no, they actually slow down to 10 below the limit.
I tailgated the person, probably the first time I've ever actually felt it was justified. The idiot behind me then decides to tailgate me for some reason, because obviously I'm the one holding up traffic...

He might have been doing it as a show of support for you...like if the suv looked in his rearview and saw all the scrunched up traffic behind him he'd get a move on.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. No matter what you think, there is NEVER a justified reason for tailgating.
Oh, and for the love of God, when are merging onto Deerfoot, if you can't find it in yourself to get up to 100km/h before you actually get on Deerfoot, please get up to that speed before moving into the middle lane. Especially when you decide to change lanes doing 80km/h in the middle of the Calf Robe bridge causing everyone behind you to slam on their brakes.

You just described a perfect reason for tailgating. Lay on the horn and you have a great teaching tool for preventing this act in the future!

Trust me, in the situation I was describing from this morning, I think tailgating and laying on the horn would have done more damage than good. It is not up to me, you or anyone else on the road not in a CPS car to "teach" anyone else how to drive.
If I find anyone tailgating me, the first thing I will do is apply some firm but quick pressure to my brakes. If that doesn't cause you to stop, I will immediately begin to slow down...right lane or left lane. Stay a reasonable distance from my rear bumper and we'll all get along fine.
You tailgating me will not cause me to go faster...regardless of the circumstances. And it is one of the most unsafe (sober) driving practices there is.

I'll laugh my friggin ass off if you come on here someday complaining of being rear ended. Brake tappers are as bad if not worse than the tailgaters.

While i agree it is unsafe... move out of the effing way if you feel it is that unsafe. Take yourself out of the danger instead of increasing it.

Luckily for you and me, rarely do I find myself in this situation, because generally I am very aware of my surroundings when driving and will work to remove myself from those situations before they start. I think I've done it once in the last couple of years. It happened to be last week on Deerfoot in rush hour when some ass in a jacked up Dodge Ram took offense to the car and a half I left between me and the car in front of me, instead of the 3 feet he left between my bumper and his.
It is amazing how riding a motorcycle completely changes your view of driving...I'm sure any other riders on here would agree.

So you hate tailgating, as it's not our job to police the roads, but then you think it's fine to hit your brakes to show them you're better than them? Your hitting the breaks may cause an accident in itself, and you should really leave that kind of stuff to the police to take care of.

Firm quick pressure is not the same as slamming on ones brakes.
I will admit that my 'handling' of my tailgating friend last week is not productive, or overly safe, but how do any of you seriously and rationally justify tailgating?

I swear it's like some bizarro-opposite world out there, everyone insists on merging onto the road and promptly moving over to the fast lane no matter when they plan on exiting or how fast they're going.
Even if there is no one in front of them, just move into the fast lane and stay there.
Becomes a problem when the police are on their way to an emergency like I saw last night, right lane was wide open with 3 cars in the fast lane. When they saw the lights, one guy cut across to the right, one person pretty much hit the brakes in the fast lane and the 3rd pulled over to the left. Cluster-f.

For tailgating, you are responsible for what is ahead of you, not exactly what is behind you. I would rather slow down because I wouldn't want to be at fault for hitting the guy infront of me after an idiot plows into my back bumper.
Also... Just because you have to turn left onto Anderson road from 14th Street, it does not mean you need to get into the left lane at the Rockyview Hospital. Every day there is some person who absolutely needs the left lane right after coming off Glenmore and will go 10 KMH to get there.
Edit: Of course the are in the far right lane on Glenmore and could have made their life easier by being in the 2nd lane.

Same goes for the drivers heading onto NB Deerfoot from Anderson...they just HAVE to move over lanes as soon as they can thereby doing nothing but slowing Deerfoot traffic and the traffic that backs up behind them down to a crawl. Nevermind the folks already on NB Deerfoot that want to take the exit for Southland...fata them, right?
So they know, those lanes don't end right away....they go all the way up to Glenmore
