Having used to live there, its much worse up there and its much more obvious there. People move to Sherwood Park because of the considerable lower property tax. IMO Deerfoot Trail would be easily manageable if it wasnt for the "other communities"

Sherwood Park (a community of close of over 60,000) is considered a legal hamlet there by not having to pay as much to the province in taxes etc. The county of Strathcona (where Sherwood Park is located) also has ownership of Alberta's biggest scam where all those "dirty" oil refineries pay tax to the county of Strathcona and not the City of Edmonton.

Edmonton has started to fight back a little, Edmonton refused to pay for the upgrades to St Albert Trail forcing St Albert to pay for it for its citizens to drive in.

I still think toll roads are the way to go to fix the imbalances. Everyone who lives in Calgary gets a free pass, everyone else pays.

Ah but who would use those payday loan shops, pawn shops, porn shops and liquor stores if it wasn't for Dover?!

Which is why every road in Strathcona is beautifully paved, many changing back to dirt when you leave the county.

Because as one poster said a while ago, he/she grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and likes wide open spaces (his/her reason for not wanting to live in more dense housing)

The only reason I would move to one of those communities is for schools. I am sure you get much less riff raff than you would see at a normal Calgary school.

But don't they herd up the riff raff in Calgary to Forest Lawn, Dover and Ogden, if by what I've read on this thread is accurate?

A long time friend of mine from Bear's Paw went to Cochrane high until it got so bad there that she started making the trek into the city for high school. In the bigger schools in the city there are so many 'good' kids that they get stuck in the smart people classes while the 'bad' kids usually end up in the very remedial stuff and you're kept away from them. Not as possible in a smaller school.

It's important to expose young children to riff raff at an early age. Gets them ready for the real world... the workplace.

So it doesn't look like the fee will be axed anytime soon (by that I mean before the end of the year) . . . some Aldermen don't want it axed at all by the sounds of it.

Here is the amendment on the table right now (they voted down a motion to refer this decision to a later date) . . . this hasn't been voted on yet as they've broken for lunch . . .

---------------------------------------------

Amendment. Alderman Stevenson, Seconded by Alderman Jones

That the Park and Ride fee at LRT parking lots be eliminated for the majority of users, with a reserved parking system put in place at select lots, no later than 2011 April 14, subject to further recommendations provided, as follows:
  • Is the fee a barrier to usage?
  • Impacts to spill-over into community
  • Adjusting costs to respond to markets
  • Shuttle buses
  • Impacts to no fee
  • Reserved parking and other innovative approaches.

Further be it resolved that Administration provide further options, after consultation with users, if any, for managing parking at LRT and BRT stations to Council no later than 2011 February 14.

I think this motion does essentially axe the fee (right away), but gives administration the flexibility to explore ways to use portions of the lots for reserved paid parking for instance (indicated through a report due in April). The Mayor's proposal indicated using 25% of high demand lots for reserved parking.

You may be right but that's not what it sounded like during the meeting, it sounded like they were giving themselves until April to do it.

I like the sticker idea - We should give out "resident cards" to anyone with a Calgary address, and that gets you ~$2.50 (or whatever the f*** a bus ticket costs) for a bus ticket.

People without the pass pay the true cost, say $6.00. This should work like our universities work, where all the Chinese kids get to pay the true cost as non-residents, where as Canadians get the subsidized tuition rate.

I hate that part of my significant property tax payment goes to subsidize the transit system I don't use, which is in turn used by a bunch of parasite communities that don't pay into the same pot I do. I have no problem paying for other Calgarians, as we all pay into the same pot, but those free loaders from DeWinton who use my train and pay 1/5th of what it costs to operate really grinds my gears!

*the above post is meant to be interpreted as slightly tongue-in-cheek, but can be considered my real feelings once I'm drunk.

I think the best thing to do make the major roads coming into the city toll roads. It is like this in many US cities. Photos of the licence plate are taken and those with address' outside the city are billed.

Would my Calgary golf and country club sticker work, which came with the car when I bought it?

I was thinking the same thing... I never use CT so what is to prevent people from selling them to out of towners??
Im sure they have thought of this and if you get busted using a card and dont have the proper address a fine is handed out.

That's the most likely scenario to happen, but I think they are saving that card for when it's the next annex time!

I'd make love to the mayor who tolls those South and North Sponges.
