I think we should go to Instant Run-off Voting and completely get rid of vote splitting effects. Of all the political levels that could use a little electoral reform, the municipal elections would be by far the easiest.

I just watched the video of Burrows launching his campaign... wtf... the people there weren't even listening. You could hear many people talking loudly in the background.

I met Naheed at a BBQ last year in Ramsay, he tried to eat my baby...
Seriously he seemed like a pretty smart cookie, and a nice guy. I'll have to hear more of his official platform before I go deciding where I stand with him. Still plenty of people to announce their candidacy as well.

Kind of wondered when I saw his facebook update last night, although I assumed that he was going to run for alderman. Naheed is a great guy for sure and a great candidate to say the least.

I like Nenshi, but hopefully he's not just gonna split votes with Hehr.

I think all candidates are gonna have to deal with vote splitting with relatively similar views:
Nenshi/Hehr/Stewart/Hawksworth
McIver/Burrows/Lord/Colley-Urquhart/Connelly
Hughes will split votes with another urban-chicken activist if one enters.
The candidate that will win will be the one that can stand above this crowded field.

Nenshi cracks Twitter local trending.

And on Thursday at about noon, Trendsmap.comidentified something interesting -- a local mayoralty candidate made the list of most popular Calgary trends, marking perhaps the first time a candidate has cracked that list.

There was nothing in that presentation that surprised me (confirmation of existing thinking), but I am glad that it is being spelled out. It is better to have a leader that can clearly identify an issue than one that waves arms and continues status quo.
My only issue is that Nenshi merely advocates to overinvest in the poor areas and hope for the best. I understand the limitation of the forum in presenting what the root cause of the isses are, or what his recommended solutions may be, but I wish he would've touched on that more. I also suppose that he wasn't a mayoral candidate at the time of presentation.

Simple one that I found and know about all-too-well. The Arena map he showed, how they are all below the Red Line.
In his map, he only shows 'City Of Calgary' owned and operated arenas. He doesn't seem to consider the vast number of 'Community' owned and operated arenas in his presentation.
Perhaps he thinks that the City should own and control everything (very socialist ideal) and forgo any community or corporate support (such as Cardel Place in Coventry Hills).
Perhaps he thinks the City is lacking in investment in this area (which I totally agree with), with the only recent spending being done to renovate 20+ year old rinks.
Perhaps he merely doesn't know and didn't take the time to find out.
I don't know. All that I know is this - if the rest of his presentation had the same level of obvious omission, then reality is very different from how he was presenting it. (comparing megacity Los Angeles, pop 3.8M w/12.9M-17.8M in the area, to unknown Curitiba, pop 1.8M w/3.2M in the area, is also an obvious skew)

I think his point may have been, all things being equal, if the City is investing in recreational facilities, it should do so equitably. In fact, poorer neighbourhoods probably have less a chance to develop facilities on their own relative to wealthier neighbourhoods with greater resources. Also keep in mind that the presentation is edited down, so some of the nuances of his argument may be lost.
Edit: Something Nenshi said on facebook with regard to the rec centres stuff in this presentation:
Quote:
I'm not very happy with the final image on rec centres -- it's kind of stitched together with the best data I had at the time. A more productive line of questioning would have been to look at all areas of civic investment (rec centres, parks, libraries, arts facilities, and so on) and see if my hypothesis about chronic underinvestment in some areas holds up.
|
Not sure the population difference between Curitiba and LA is relevant in the way he was comparing them. Both made very conscious decisions about mobility investment - a choice Calgary also has to make as it emerges as a large city.

Frankly I can't do this at this point in time. If someone posts one that summarizes everything though I will add it to the first post as well.
I had heard that Hawkesworth and Dianne Colley-Urquhart were declaring today, but haven't heard that yet and am too lazy to look.
