Optik PVR is awesome. Had it at my old house, then took Shaw up on a sweet promo for my new place - after a week with shaw I have called telus to get them in with optik, the pvr is 10 years ahead of the crap Shaw has.

Well, my joy with Shaw digital cable is short lived. A technician came by to see why we weren't getting all the channels we should be, and it is because the signal is too weak for HD channels where we are. Fixing it properly with new cable running out to the box would be at least 1.5 years away according to the tech.
Such a downer.
I guess I am switching to Bell satellite or Telus Optik.

I talked with my friend about this last night and she said those with the new DCX3400 boxes will be getting an upgrade pretty soon (who knows what that means) to match the quality and speed of the guide etc that Telus has.

Got a flyer in the mailbox from Telus, and they seem to be offering more services for what I currently pay with Shaw and have some "free" PVR and XBox 360 promos.
I know I can get a better deal as I'm paying just over $100 for high speed internet, basic HD package and sports HD package with a purchased cable box and purchased modem. No xtreme speed internet, no PVR. I've basically been on the plan for the last 2-3 years.
Just getting my facts straight and developing my strategy this week.
Anyone tried calling Shaw recently and have success with retentions?

I believe the Free PVR requires a 3 year contract with Telus.

Yep, you're right.I don't mind signing a contract, BUT the Telus promotion looks like a good deal for the first little bit, but then prices get jacked from the second year onwards.I'd probably push for the deal quoted in post #277. I'd get faster internet, more channels, and a home line for about $15/Month cheaper.I'll post details after I call.

So went to my buddies house who just go Telus Optik he has the 25 mgb connection and while recording 3 hd shows and watching 1 sd show doing a shaw speed test still showed 16 mbps download speed. To me this is great. I am very impressed with telus right now. I just only wish I could put it in my street His house is a new build in new brighton

Yeah, I was very impressed with everything about it except for the fact that I could only get 1 HD/2 SD streams at any time. Whenever they are able to remedy that problem, I'll gladly sign back up. Apparently sometimes their installers can do this or that to make the numbers better so I could qualify for the 2 HD, but it's a total crapshoot. Ah well.

^^ I moved to a new place (bankview, house isnt just new just I never lived there before) and they installed a new wire from the pole out back and I get the 2HD/1Sd. We have four of us living in the house, have been watching HD show and all four of us using internet (laptops or iPhones) and no real slow downs.

Yeah, apparently if you can get an actual Telus installer out, they will do everything in their power to make it work, whereas the contract guys just go, oh, this'll be good enough. I'd love to have an actual Telus guy out here (would even pay a bit for his time) but there is no guarantee if you just call in. Ah well!

Yeah I had a contract guy and had to wait over a week to get a real Telus guy out, so frustrating. actually a couple guys, first guy wanted me to cut a bunch of trees. Telus guy comes out says contractor was just lazy its possible. New guy comes and installs the wire

Hopefully telus can get it up to 6 hd feeds at once and that would be perfect. Not that I would ever need 6 tvs going at a time but im sure my kids if/when I have them would enjoy cartoons in hd in their rooms

I was at my Christmas party last night and one of the husbands there worked for Telus, so I proceeded to ask him about how he liked the new Optik TV and if he had any problems with internet speeds while watching TV.
He said that he was sure the product was good, but his experience with Telus and thier customer service was really bad across the board, even with the staff discounts he couldn't bring himself to deal with with it. He said they used Shaw for TV and Internet and Rogers for wireless. Needless to say, I was really shocked. Another person at the table, who sets up phone stuff for our remote offices with Telus repeated the same sentiment and blamed it on the contracts Telus gets people to sign, so it means they don't try enough to ensure things get fixed.
What is the overall experience that other people have had with Telus customer service? Especially compared to Shaw's and Bell. Were these 2 people jaded by past experiences that were no longer really valid?

the couple times I have called in it has been like any other company I have dealt with, hit and miss. When I was having troubles getting set up at the new place they were great and all of the guys that have come to the house to set up have been good, except the contractor.... I called and complained about it and they gave me a free month and were pretty decent about it.

Personally I notice a huge difference between the level of support you get from Telus depending on if you are on a contract or not. The only contract I have agreed to this century from Telus was a 1 year contract; but that only had a $120 cancellation fee and I had my first 2 months free. ($140 value.) So really it wasn't any kind of penalty if I wanted to cancel.
Currently we pay $35 for home phone and 6 mbps internet with Telus, and I look at friends who pay more than double that on a 3 year contract; but got a $500 laptop in return.
My bottom line- Telus is OK as long as you aren't on a contract.
