This is funny, Lazeo is on his last legs so that means the O-line will be bleeding badly this year. Only sure thing is Archibald.

Ralph, good for him. Little guy made had a decent carer but there are options. Good luck.

Jim Davis, hurtin back but we have good depth at that position.

Only thing is the o-line, if it sucks than it'll be a long year, no room for Joff to run and no protection for Henry.

That's sucks with Jesse Newman retirement. We lost 3 starters on the OL from last season. That is pretty to replace. Only upside is O'Neill and Ellis played last season as well and they will replace one or two lost OL.

So going to the training camp Stamps questionable positions are Offensive Linemen, Linebackers, Special Team. I sure hope some young guys will step up and show they can play in this league.

So far we lost the following players:
OL: Tsoumpas(free agent, NFL), Newman(retired for personal reason) and Pilon(retired due to injuries).
LB: MLB Tim Johnson(requested release due to personal reason), Shannon James(released), and Dwayne Carpenter(released). Both James and Carpenter were released pretty much due to salary cap issue.
R/RB:WR Brett Ralph(retired), FB Teyo Johnson(not officially retired yet)
Special Team: K Sandro DeAngelis(free agent, Hamilton), PR Markus Howell(retired), KR Demetrius Summers(released). We have to add that Carpenter and James are both awesome as chasing the returner plus Brett Ralph is the holder for Sandro.

This training camp will make it more interesting as there are so many positions open for grabs.

Based on an absolute need, the @calstampeders are contacting teams league wide asking for OL. At least 2 tms are closing doors. Too early

Looks like Bryan Chiu will retire as well. That could be a big blow to the Als.

Just a thought that crossed my mind....new agreement with players association that included drug testing. Shortly thereafter we see a crapload of players retiring? Coincidence?

Nah maybe not.

Interesting. I was just going to post asking why so many retirements out of the blue - and why now? Two questions come to mind -

- Why can't the Stampeders do anything to convince these players to not retire?

- Why are they retiring at this particular time? That's a pretty crappy move on their parts. If they retired in January it would have given the team way more time to find a suitable replacement.

That's a interesting thought, never really thought about it.

It would probably be better to go out now before they get caught.

With salaries being what they are in the CFL Im sure that any player caught would not want to get fined. $1000 to some of these guys is a lot of coin, hell $500 to a player earning $36k to $50k is a bunch.

If I was a blogger I think I'd start that rumor. Im not, so feel free to steal my thoughts.
I wonder what the associated penalties are in the new agreement?

I fully concur SCH! What a horrible thing for a player to do to his team. If they were thinking about it beforehand they should have the cajones to do it at a time it would have less impact on their club. Unless of course there were extenuating circumstances.

I don't want to dabble into his personal reasons for retirement but it seems way out of the blue just to pull the plug on his career.

Totally agree considering he is so young. Timing of his retirement is absolutely horrible,

I guess we will never know. Huff doesn't even know apparently. Will just be one of those things that we can speculate on forever, but never know the truth about.

Chiu on the other hand doesn't surprise me too much. Grey cup win, the guy has been around for a long time. Good time to hang them up.

It could be many players are retiring because CFL salaries are crap. Players can make better $ in the real world.

Is it likely Tsoumpas will be an NFL cut, and come back to the Stamps?

No, they really like Soup. I feel he will stick and from what I've heard.

Re: Newman. I know him. I know why he did it. For the amount of money they make, like Trout asserted, it isn't that glamorous to kill yourself for. He already has a ring, now he needs to sort out what he needs to sort out over the next year. Now guys like Godfrey and Timmy O get a shot at starting full time next year.

Re: the drug testing leading to his retirement. False, he was not a steroid or hard drug user. He was not bulky and cut enough for that.

Default CFL Introduces Coach-to-Quarterback Headsets

Quote:
It's an innovation that will improve communication with the quarterback and improve the flow of the game," said Kevin McDonald, the CFL's Director of Football Operations.

"This is a more efficient way for a coach to call a play or communicate with his quarterback, instead of using numbers or signals."

Here's how the system will work:

* Each team will have three separate radio-in-helmet units, one for each QB that dresses for games.

* Only one system is allowed to be "active" on field at any one time.

* Communication is one-way: the QB has a headset in his helmet but no microphone.

* Coaches on the sideline and in the team's spotter's booth atop the stands can communicate via the system.

* The device will be turned on once a team gains possession and turned off when there are ten seconds remaining on the play clock, and the signal will not be switched back on until the play has been whistled dead by the officials.

* A league employee will handle this duty in stadium; the signal will be monitored and recorded in the Command Centre at CFL headquarters to ensure fair operation.

* The specially equipped helmets will be marked with an identifying decal.

The introduction of quarterback headsets is the latest in a series of technological advances for CFL's football operations.
Quote:
"We're always looking for ways to improve or speed up CFL games , while respecting the tradition and continuity of what is already a great game," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"After working on the implementation of quarterback headsets with our teams, we're confident this is a step in the right direction for our game, our league and, ultimately, our fans."

In my view it doesn't matter what the reason was for the retirement but his timing is horrible.

His late...late...late announcment will cause lots of problems for the Stampeders.
