I wrote a few aldermen to voice my support for the bridge as I used to live in that ward and did so when the original plans were announced.
At any rate, I asked a bit about the memorial plans in the area and this is the response I got for those who are interested:
"The bridge is just the beginning. You may be interested to know that there is a Soldier’s Memorial planned with a naming wall for the second phase of Memorial Drive (West of the firehall). My office is working closely with the armed forces, and the project is in the design stage right now. The City is supplying the funding for the design, but there will be fundraising for the actual monument. The preliminary design is worthy of the project.
There will also be a Legacy Plaza terracing down to the river at the southwest intersection of Memorial Drive and Louise Bridge. The plaza will be lovely and solemn, incorporating quotes related to Paschendale. It will coincide with the 100 anniversary of the King’s Own Regiment and several other regiments. We are also planning several celebrations with the armed forces along Memorial Drive. Stay tuned."
Sounds great to me!

Has anyone thought of getting as many CP members together as possible to the grand opening of this bridge all wearing our Flames Jerseys?
When they cut the ribbon we could all chant "Go Flames GO!!"

Interesting, I was noticing just yesterday that there was a construction site closed off just west of the firehall, I guess they've already started. A quick google says that the King's Own Regiment was founded in April, 2010, so I guess they're planning on having that set up by next spring.

Absolutely. In case people don't know, Memorial Drive is being re-developed as a tribute to our fallen heroes from Canada's past and today. The bridge is in the perfect location to associate it with a memorial / tribute concept, whether anyone agrees with the bridge or not. I will also echo the sentiment that $22 million, relative to other capital projects that are going on or will be going on around the city, is simply pocket change.

I had a similar response from this same Alderman. Let's just say she's by for the most responsive Alderman on City council, is engaged and works extremely hard for her constituency.

I guess the only question I have on the bridge is why would it go on 8th Street. Last time I checked there is a bridge on 10th Street. I can see something between 10th street and Curling Rink but the location seems strange to me.

Love it. Not a huge fan of the color scheme, but atleast it's bold and daring.
