I'm totally watching it out of habit... I don't even think I laugh over it anymore. A sure sign I should stop watching it and I think I will. I'll watch the series finale when it come out.
Barely finished the seventh season of this show. Couldn't take anymore. I hope this show spawns a meme in the way Happy Days did with jumping the shark, but for dragging things out.
When it first came out HIMYM was a hilarious show with an interesting premise with a lot of off the cuff really funny moment.
then they fell into the friends trap where all these stupid serious personal problems started popping up, Ted became a whiner, Barney became less funny and more pathetic, the whole baby thing and issues on top of issues.
It became a show that I fell out of like with very quickly, kind of like friends.
I don't really want to watch comedies to have stupid issues and serious dialogue pop into play, I can watch drama's for that.
I read this today that they revealed the mother and I was like who cares its a few years to late.
You know shows like Working and Arrested Development and Better off Ted and even Drew Carey were brilliant because they knew they were there to make you laugh and the characters were foils for humor. We watched them so we didn't have to think about real life problems like love and breakups and parents dying, we were there to be entertained and to laugh.
I don't care about Marshall and Lilly or Ted and his whiny self confidence issues, I thought Ross was an a$$ and Rachel was ######ed for falling in love with him.
The last good funny scene that I can remember from HIMYM that made me really laugh was when Marshall went to work with Barney and they had ninja's creeping around the building.

I was kind of hoping Ted would be single for the rest of his life. Man is that guy ever annoying.
Haha! I was thinking the same thing!
He starts every episode talking to the kids on the couch, when it comes time to end the series:
"Hi kids, and thats how I met your mother. However, she chose another man instead of me. This brings me to why I stalked her, broke in to your house and am holding you both at gunpoint."

That would be the greatest ending of a show ever except
Bang Bang
The screen goes blank, we hear "Oh god what have I done"
click bang
credits to the sopranos theme song

I really like comedies that can mix in drama. I really liked Scrubs for that reason.
But like Scrubs and shows before it, it is a fine line to walk. It is way too easy to turn the characters in charicatures, and for the drama to become maudlin. The things that worked, the writers keep needing to go back to them until they are beating a dead horse. Then entire episodes become gimmicks. Shows like that, ones that seem to have a logical start and end point really need a predefined end so they can plan and pace correctly. In HIMYM you can tell that they have been milking it for years, and there are some scenes that still work, but just way too much filler that dilutes it.
And I think the stars know it; Jason Segel needed to be talked into coming back. CBS just doesn't have a good enough show to replace it so they just backed the money truck up to keep the cast coming back.

Scrubs was special because it had brilliant comedy writing and their focus was on a comedy script, for the most part you had serious issues but they were part of a setup to a punch line. The only exception being when the main characters brother died and everyone rallied around him.

this would redeem all the junk they've slapped together during this show's death spiral. I would love if this happened, and then they started playing that happy theme song while showing snapshots of the kids' lifeless bodies.
baaa ba ba ba baaa...ba ba ba baaa...ba daa ba da ba da da da da da da baaaaaa!
So am I the only one who still enjoys watching the show? I'll admit, it's not as good anymore, but it's still ok IMO. Two episodes this season that I thought were good was the Robyn and Muchmusic episode and the one with the Karate Kid.

I still like it and enjoy it, but it pales compared to how good it used to be.
The old showbiz phrase, "always leave them wanting more" isn't in vogue anymore.

The Robyn/Alanis comparison was great.
I've loved this show from the start but there were 2 or 3 episodes this season that were pretty brutal (the one last week for example). I feel they've kept the Ted/Robyn thing going too long, so the girl Ted ends up marrying is going to seem like 2nd place and not really give closure to the show.
