Phillips is credited with creating the CD, although Sony did have some of their error checking technology included in the spec.
DVD was a Toshiba technology - Sony was backing a different standard.

Wow, that didn't take universal long to get a release out saying they were flipping, seeing as they were the main studio backer of HD. They must have been dying with the blu-ray dominance over the last quarter, It will be interesting to see if any of the HD studios will offer trade-in programs.

I'd be shocked if any studio offers a trade-in program.

Just picked up a hddvd player from London Drugs online for $99. The toshiba a3. I highly doubt i will buy any hddvds, but it is a good upconverting dvd player.
Didn't want to burn out my ps3 playing regular movies.
They also had the a30 for $149 if you wanted 1080p.

Compared with the PS3 the upconversion on the Toshiba is much better at least at 1080. Haven't compared them at 720 yet.

Why didn't you just buy an upscaling DVD player? You can get them for as little as $40 and they do 1080P.

Plus like Locked out said, the toshiba upconverts pretty good. Read it on a few other forums too.
I'm sure that rca isn't very good. In fact the sony upconvert could only read 2/3's of the discs i put in. What a crap product.

I haven't experienced that, but now you got me paranoid. Something I'll have to monitor. Thanks for the heads up.

No worries. I keep my ps3 on top of my tower speakers so it can get the maximum airflow. Not very safe but it will have to do for now. I'm sure it's ok but after that stupid 360 ring of death thing it keeps me alert. hehe.
Still not as hot as the HD PVR. Man that thing can heat my house.

I have one of the launch 60gb PS3's, which I think run hotter than the current versions. I have had no heat problems, even though it seems to run quite warm.
At one time, I had it running full tilt for 4 weeks, 24 hours a day, doing the Folding at Home. It uses all the processors. I dont think failure due to heat on the PS3 is any problem at all.

Hmmm i guess the A3 is only $99 at Future Shop now. Could have saved the shipping costs. It comes with 300 and the Bourne Ultimatum on HD.
It might qualify for the 5 free hd movies also.

Apparently retailers are now advertising the HD-DVD players as Upconverting DVD players that will play HD-DVD content.

I'm know nothing about blu ray or hd dvd, but if I bought one I assume it would be able to play my old dvd's, just not with the same picture quality as a bluray disc? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Yes that is correct.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are high definition dvd formats, meaning they play at 1080p resolution (1920x1080 pixels). Regular DVD's are only 480p (740x480 pixels I think). The capacity of Blu-ray and HD-DVD are much greater than DVD also, so the audio and video arent compressed as much, which results in a crisper picture and better sound, resolution aside.
If you dont have a 720p or better TV, you wont see much a difference from regular DVD to either high definition DVD format. On less than 720p, you might see slight gains because of the lower compression.

HD-DVD Xbox 360 addon prices go down to $50, not bad if you want to pick one up on the cheap, as I'm sure their will be something of a firesale of the rest of the DVDs, though still seems like a waste to me.

So now that BluRay has "won", do you think prices will drop?

I haven't even see HD-DVD movies drop in price at brick and mortar stores, ket alone Blu-ray. I'd expect some kind of liquidation of HD-DVD movies at some point - but Blu-ray doesn't really have any incentive to lower their prices now. Still, it should drop in price over time like most tech gizmos.
