Day Trip

http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/...91564/day_trip

Day Trip is Metheny's first record with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Antonio Sanchez, and it should not be the last. McBride and Sanchez are jazzmen with R&B and rock bones, the former combining a fluid touch with assertive momentum, punching counter-rhythms between Sanchez's snare-and-tom exclamations. In "The Red One," McBride and Sanchez push hard in funk and reggae time, forcing Metheny to throw dirt on his tone and attack. Metheny thrives in a trio format — the space suits his spiraling runs and the afterring in his pointed electric sound — and he responds here with excited improvising

I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed with the new Trews album.

I really like them as musicians but I just find their work so unbelievably pretentious.

First new Counting Crows album in six years is out today, if there's any fans.

The new REM album is great. Kind of, New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

Geared up to Accelerate and readying themselves to pal around North America with the youngsters in Modest Mouse and the National, R.E.M. have announced their big plans for the summer. The band will head to Europe in July, August, and early September, with more festival appearances and a full UK trek to be announced shortly.

But before any of that, the band will play a one-off show in London on March 24 at the legendary Royal Albert Hall. It's a benefit for the ICA.

Accelerate drops March 31 in the UK and April 1 in the U.S. from Warner Brothers.

An early track-by-track review:

http://stereogum.com/archives/premat...&utm_medium=ff

The cumulative effect of Accelerate is a bit like a roller coaster ride -- you wait forever to get on it (it's been four years since Around The Sun!), it's a total rush in the moment, and when it's over, it leaves you wanting to go back and do it again.

They sound positively hungry on this record. It's almost impossible not to hear Accelerate as an attempt to win back old fans and regain the critical respect they've lost in the past ten years. That said, the music doesn't sound desperate, forced, or designed for maximum commercial impact, as with U2's last two records. If anything, they sound pissed-off and eager to brawl.

Saw that in the store the other day and was suprised, had no idea.

Mars Volta are so full of crap now, loved their first 2 albums and At The Drive Inn but I don't care for the new material.

Kathleen Edwards' new album came out a couple weeks ago and it's incredible, as expected.

I picked up the new Counting Crows. Pretty roots-rockish, which is different than their last album which was more 60s-Bacharach-pop oriented, or even the one before that which was more sonically experimental. Have to listen to it a few times before I can review it though...

The new Kathleen Edwards is really great. Some of her best stuff I think.

Another Canadian songstress - Sarah Slean - just released a good album of piano lounge-pop. Pretty mellow if you can get past the first song.

***

Some other great records you might be waiting on but didn't know are soon out (or just released):

British band Elbow released 'The Seldom Seen Kid'. Still pretty adventurous stuff, but very accessible pop rock.

Sun Kil Moon have a new record out next week, I believe, called 'April'. Big fan of Mark Kozelek.

And I picked up a record a little while ago by Atlas Sound called 'Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel'. Really awesome if you like post-rock, ambient type stuff. They're still 'songs', just the structure is pushed pretty far. It's by Bradford Cox who is the main guy behind psych-rockers Deerhunter.

I had not heard of Kozelek until I came across his AC/DC covers album, What's Next to the Moon. Good stuff.

From what I've heard of 'April' it's fantastic. Really beautiful...

I'm not a huge fan of Red House Painters, and have always thought Sun Kil Moon was a much more interesting venture. There's lots of guest stars on the new one too.

Kozelek is definitely an interesting cat. He makes pretty original stuff, yet it's solidly rooted in rock history.

Yikes. Asia made a "new" record:

http://www.originalasia.com/

NEVER AGAIN

This lyric documents my personal odyssey over the last three years. Many astrologers believe we are entering The Age of Gemini, and some hold this more than a little responsible for the drastic change in my perception, and behaviour from June 2005 to the present day. Each night, as I sing the second verse (...'a dazzling creation....') on stage, I cannot escape the startling visual image of Xerxes from the film '300', but the real meat in the sandwich here (as usual) is the chorus, which is really a kind of distilled mantra for The Ten Commandments. The verse itself is upbeat and optimistic, also altruistic, but this becomes triple underlined in the chorus.

I already "acquired" it....its actually suprisingly good...the last couple of albums were a complete disappointment in my opinion. This one is much better than I expected it to be.

Saw them on the BBC yesterday, found them cool and funny as usual, but...old. Then I realized how long I'd been listening to them, and Bam! I guess I'm old too. (wish I was cool and funny)

Like the song, will add CD to the REM library.

panic at the disco! 's Soph. album, Pretty Odd, was just released. I was a huge fan of their 1st album "A fever you cant sweat out", because of their different sound. This second album , which i haven't got to listen to all of yet, is almost a disappointment. They said they weren't gonna move from the style of their first album but this album is completely different. If you like the Beatles' Sgt peppers album, then there is a good chance you like this album.
