Eventually, time does catch up. Can't expect you're getting the RNHs and Ekholms of old each and every season.

And they just don't have the chops nor the chips to swing the trades to replace what those players brought.

Should've hung on to Holloway and Broberg. Whoops!

I think two years. In the third season, he demands a trade.

I would have preferred he left next summer for sure, this contract isn't the commitment to the Oilers some are making it out to be though. The more you look at it the cap savings just barely keep the current roster together...maybe. The team could still totally go off the rails. All the other teams in the league also have a rising cap...and will probably spend it better around the fringes.

If Connor's deal is only 5 million more than Walman's you know it's very team friendly.

I hope the Oilers crash and burn in spectacular fashion over the next couple of years.

Wouldn't the second year of the new contract just be exactly the same as this year of this contract? I wonder if the people who think they have him for three more years are the same people who were worried about him signing an extension this year?

Speaking of next season...

Bouchard
Nurse
Walman
Emberson
Regula
=======
$28.825M

Jones
Ekblad
Forsling
Mikkola
Kulikov
=======
$25M

Also... when does the Skinner/Pickard watch begin? The goalie shelf in their cupboard is looking pretty bare next year...

Spoiler!

I admit, I do not understand this signing from McDavid’s camp angle. How does this extension benefit him?

It shuts everyone up and gives him time to figure out where he wants to go.

It gives him a few more years to try and win a Cup with his best friend. That's it. If Draisaitl was not his best friend and on the team he would not have signed it.

Don't tell edmontonians that. They think its because their city and team is special.

And their wives are best friends. They’re all best friends with the benefits.

And we know if that were really the case he would have signed 8 years. Now if/when the ship starts to sink he can leave and not feel guilty like he would have after two fluke runs to the finals.

Exactly. He's looking out for #1 here, himself. Give up a few million and see if that helps with depth on the team over the next couple of years, if not he's outta there. And wherever he goes he'll sign for closer to 20 million that 12. He wants to win, he couldn't care less if that was Edmonton or somewhere else. For now it's the Oilers but the moment it's not........see ya.

It's a show me contract. But it's the player saying it.

If I’m an Oilers fan I’m not all that happy today. And that makes me very happy.

Oh, I get the optics. It’s the bolded part that is puzzling. It is not a small change even for millionaire players to leave on the table.

Walman/McDavid 15.9M this season
Walman/McDavid 19.5M next season

There is no doubt he took less...does it really help them improve the team that wasnt good enough??

Tom Brady consistently took less money than he could have earned to help the New England Patriots build a competitive team, sacrificing at least $60 million over his career for this purpose. His priority was winning, which he believed was better supported by allowing the team to invest in other talented players.
