Agreed, a year from now we'll be talking about signing Eichel after "missing out" on Bennett.
My offseason wish list: - Top 4 LD that can anchor a pairing away from Weegar, replace Andersson, and help with Parekh's development.
- A backup goalie that doesn't lose you games
- Optional: A top 6 skilled forward that can help Frost/Zary develop into a better C.

I don't don't want Bennett or Marner, love playoff Bennett but he's not a #1 center and will get $7+m, Marner is a winger who'll get $12+m.
At 28 and 29 both have reached their prime.

It's close between the two of them talent wise but Johnny never played on a line with one of the best pure goal scorers off all-time. Also Johnny scored a series winner, what iconic playoff moment does Marner have?

No thanks to that. I have zero interest in any UFAs this summer.
Stay the course Conny.

He's probably perfect for an ownership group with aspirations to finish in a wild card spot as soon as possible and secure a couple games of playoff revenue.

I think Marner is going to sign with a team in the US like the Ducks, Hawks, Sharks or some other team that is up and coming with a decent amount of cap space. Utah also makes a ton of sense with a new market and a team that could push to make the playoffs next year.
That leaves Trelving with some cap space to make moves and the obvious one to me is he brings in Sam Bennett and then extends Knies for a long term deal. Treliving loves truculence and will want some clutch players after seeing Matthews struggle again in these playoffs. Bennett fills a big need in Toronto and with him being from there and loving the big game moments I absolutely see Sam choosing the Leafs if he does leave Florida.
The Flames really should sit on the sidelines of the big free agents and outside of moving Anderson fora leargely futures based return I think staying the course makes the most sense. If the season goes south then guys like Coleman and possibly Kadri/Frost/Backlund could all be pieces teams would want (if Frost goes the short term route as RFA he could be a rental for teams next year).
With McKenna being a generational talent there is no reason the flames should be going big game hunting and banking that this past season was a launchpad and not a one off

I wouldn’t mind taking a run at Bennett if he’s willing to come back. He’d be a better choice than Marner who can’t play the rough game needed to succeed in the playoffs.

I'm hoping they steer clear of Marner, more wingers isn't what this team needs. Not sure there's anything center wise in free agency that could be considered elite. I love Bennett, but he's more second line centre. Although his physicality and compete levels would be welcome for sure. I like Gavrikov too, nothing wrong with a big physical dman - even if he's older than Rasmus.
Not sure free agency is the way to go to build what we need, it doesn't seem to ever work for any teams that I recall. The draft and trades seem the best way, and I like our recent drafting record, but it takes time. Gotta hope Connie has some trade magic up his sleeves!

Why?
They landed Markstrom who was the #1 UFA that year, maybe Pietroangelo. They landed Tanev who was one of the most sought-after guys. In the Iggy years, guys wanted to come here to play with him.
Flames are rebuilding. Things take time.

He doesn't mean ever. He means this offseason. Because as you say, they're rebuilding.
I would be shocked if Marner picked Calgary over other teams who are closer to winning.

I don't think the Flames will attract any big UFAs as it currently stands. We are rebuilding. Elite UFAs are typically looking to win - once we have some established elite talent on the roster, and look to be nearing contender status I think it'll be tough to attract big names.

A shot a McKenna would be nice but at the end of the day, that’s all it’s going to be and all the Flames could expect.
Threw this out in the draft page this morning but it wouldn’t be surprising, I don’t think if the Sabres or Rangers, may have 9 and 12 respectively on the market for immediate help. If so, and if he falls, would the Flames have interest in making a move to get McQueen?

I think we should take a run at Gavrikov.
I do hope Vladar re-signs but, if not, I don't hate the idea of Allen as others have mentioned.
There doesn't seem to be a lot out there for top skilled 6 forwards other than Marner and I think he's Chicago bound. Which is okay by me. Not the greatest UFA group for forwards this year.

Agreed. Calgary is not an attractive destination for any of those guys unless the offer is one you can't refuse.

I don’t disagree, but I also wonder if there are any teams closer to being a playoff contender than Calgary is, that would have the cap space to give Marner a big payday. Marner joining a team that finished 15th in league standings and only 3 points out of top 10 could be more attractive for him than we realize

a fluke season doesn't make the Flames a playoff contender and they have missed for 3 straight years.
OUr top offensive players last season are our oldest players that doesn't make us an attractive destination, not until Parekh, Coronato, hopefully #1 center are firmly established.
Say what you want about Neal, but he was a top goal scorer who signed here and he specifically mentioned getting to play with top young players like Monny(23), Johnny(25), Chucky(20) at the time.
Same can be said about signing Lindholm and Hanifin to long term deals.

Is a team that got 96 points really "Re-Building"?
They need scoring. 30th OA in goals scored is not good. Bring that up to middle of the road and this team is a 100 point team easily. No, they're not rebuilding, they're fine tuning.
I want the Flames to get a top draft pick more than anybody. But the fact is, this organization will not do it.
So we are going to have to accept that they aren't going to be bottoming out any time soon. And they're going to address their needs this offseason.
I.e a top line forward to improve scoring, focusing on center depth overall, and Left side D, and a back up goalie.
It's going to be interesting how Conroy is going to do these things.

I'd be happy if our "big game hunting" was trading into the top 10 to draft a higher ranked C.

Agreed I still go back to the lottery where the Flames came so close to moving up to 6 and based on the inside info from Oilfan it wouldn’t have been crazy to think the Sharks would have been interested in making a deal based around Andersson+6 to get 2. Sucks that Utah was the lucky winner

Are they fine tuning? Honest question. The season was a fluke not a trend of a team improving. They beat expectations, but that doesn't change the makeup of the team that is old at the top.
I would argue the 14/15 team had more pieces to have success quicker after a unexpected season, and they added Dougie Hamilton and came crashing down and drafted 6th overall in the lottery the very next season. That was also with a returning Gio who was having a norris type season.
I am not arguing with you do you really think this team is a forward away? We don't even have a #1C.
You can't expect Huberdeau, Kadri, Coleman, Backlund to keep improving and keeping them afloat.
