Rantanen 4th out of active players in points per playoff-game. 8th all-time. Big game player, absolute top-tier.
I hope Canes pay what he wants, as a Finn I'd love to see Aho-Rantanen as a longterm thing.

Cap only going up.

Fair. I only think he was a producing at that clip because of MacKinnon. That's not to say he was a supporting linemate. He's a definitive 1st liner to me, but a perfect pairing for MacKinnon. We'll see how he does on a run and gun Hurricanes. He should be doing just as well there.

Not sure how the Canes, who have the best cap situation in the entire league in 2025-2026 are left holding the bag? They just made a huge upgrade for a deep playoff run.
The Avs are getting a season and a half of Necas and Jack Drury. After that, who knows, maybe Necas just keeps whining.
I'm thinking CPers are so used to the Avs making good moves, they can't comprehend a bad one?

If Rantanen goes to market, the Canes just spent Necas, Drury, and a 2nd on a rental. Maybe it pays off, but it’s a big risk. Everyone assumed the Canes would sign Guentzel, but he took the money elsewhere after they gave up a lot of assets to acquire him. This could turn out to be a much more expensive version of that deal.

Would tend to agree. They will be able to sign him. And as guys like Giroux, Karri and Crosby (amongst others have shown) you can produce well into your mid 30’s these days so it should be a contract that ages well. No worries on that old “post apex” analysis that seems so dated these days for a guy like Rantanen.

... Until Rantanen walks for nothing in the off season. Not saying that will happen, but it's a big risk. Necas is a huge price to pay for a rental.

Necas is walking for nothing next offseason. There is at least a good chance Rantanen will not.

Potential impact to us that I haven't seen discussed yet: way more room for the avs to resign makar when his contract is up.

I don't think them having the cap space would ever be an issue for Makar, they would make it work when the time comes. We can just hope he has his Tavares Flames pj pick in the back of his mind.

Marner didn’t play with MacKinnon.

It makes all the sense in the world.

Yeah people are kind of looking at the retention wrong.
Look at it as if Chicago was able to retain $4.625 of Hall's $6M salary and he actually had the value of a 3rd at that point because he was only making $1.3M.
It's like Carolina got double retention on Hall but didn't have to find a third party to facilitate

Totally read that wrong on my part. I thought he was referencing Rantanen. Re Marner, I think the same principle applies. When you play with great line mates, how much do they contribute to your point totals? It’s a debate that will always continue and vary by player. Marner is also a sure first liner. I just wonder if he goes to a different environment or if tying that much money on a few players (the Edmonton model) is a good decision or not.

The Canes gave up a lot of meh for Guentzel. More quantity than quality there. The biggest piece, the only real piece of either trade is Necas.
But yeah, that's the contending rental game my man.

Not really. It wasn’t like he is signed long term. He is ufa after next season. With all the rumours and reports over the last year or 2 , I’m pretty sure necas was going to leave when he became a ufa.

Yes the Panthers say hi. Who else? Vegas has some. Maybe it's a trend that you can't be cowards and cup winners which is fine by me.
I want to see these work out because I'd rather see more teams take these big swings. Reading this board for the past few years I almost believe 28 teams should try to out tank each other for a top 5 pick because they're wasting jet fuel if you don't win the cup.
This all said Colorado needs to shake things up. They did win that one cup, but been moving down since. They have legitimate top players at their position in Makar and MacKinnon plus some good complementary pieces. But they're not winning like a top 4 team. They're sitting around 12th in league standings. With players like McKinnon and Makar playing like they are...that's not good enough.

We can only speculate a what happens here on out for the teams involved, but I am more interested in what this does for Colorado.
Colorado just traded the best player to play alongside Mackinnon. It creates a rift, and suddenly Colorado panics and has to throw the bag at Necas in 1.5 years and X other players because this window with Mack and Makar is closing soon.
Skip to to the end of 26/27 (2.5 years away) Makar is a UFA. Depending on Colorados team environment, how flexible their cap is, and the play of Makar, there is a chance Colorado can't lock it down.
Who knows. One can dream but it's coming down to crunch time for the Avs.

But they won't be buying the last 5 years, they'll be buying the next 7 years.
And he is not going to be a top 5 or 10 player, in his 30s, playing in Carolina.
Edit: what Butterfly said.
