According to an article in the Atlantic, Ovechkin is most likely going to end the season with 888 goals, give or take.

If he does end up with 888, knowing he wears 8 and is likely fond of that number, does he have a serious conversation about retirement at that milestone? It looks like he's fallen off after that injury quite substantially.

You know what looks cooler than the novelty of 888? 900

Why? Doesnt he have 2 more years under contract? The dude is a machine and he's been written off before.

I dont see him retiring on 888, not getting the record and leaving money on the table just because it might 'look cool.'

Hahahaha sorry, what?! Stop at 888, when he's 6 away from tying and 7 from owning top spot?

No matter what he achieves this season, he's still getting 9.5 million next season. Tough to picture a scenario where a guy walks away from that kind of dough.

He's only 20 goals away from the record. Tough to see him not get 20 by the end of next season.

The funny thing about noting how Ovechkin has “fallen off” quite substantially is that he’s fallen off to a 35 goal pace, which is still better than his total last year.

He’ll retire with over 900 goals.

I love that he has been racking up some empty netters lately. Makes oilers fans salty.

"Pace" is irrelevant mostly because guys go through streaks and slumps.

But if we take "pace" at face value, he's scoring .68 goals per game this season.

He has 29 games left, so he is on pace for 19 more goals. He needs 17 to break the record.

He is on track to beat the record in his 2nd or 3rd last game of THIS season.

I'm surprised he hasn't had any multigoal games since his return. He had 5 goals in the 2 games before his injury.

A hat trick or two will really put a dent in the number.

I'd say there's a better chance that I beat the record than Ovechkin retiring with less than 10 goals to beat it.

It would be one thing if he wasn't under contract for next year, and couldn't find a team to give him a contract.

But he's playing well enough that that someone would give him a contract, even if he didn't have one.

He's over a PPG, scoring over 50 goal pace and is +17. Even if he didn't have a contract, 31 other teams would sign him for 1 year.

He's 24 total games played behind Wayne. So if he scores 17 in 24 games, he'll beat the record in the same number of games played as Wayne.

Caps have 29 games left this season.
