Jonathan Huberdeau is never getting traded.
He could score 150 points and win the Hart and it wouldn’t matter - he’s retiring a Flame or he’s going on LTIR because he’s allergic to his shoulder pads.
However, if he remains a 60-70 point power forward who’s excellent defensively for the bulk of his contract, he’s the next captain.

On pace for 30+ goals is pretty wild! Good for him and it's very cool how he himself feels this is the best he's played, ever.

I wonder if Iggy got into Huberdeaus ear about changing his game to adapt to how the game is changing today. Like Iggy had to post last lockout.

He’s really not doing anything a lot different. He’s just more confident and doesn’t feel the burden on having to score 100 points and he’s getting ice time and killing penalties which he mentioned as huge reasons he had the 115 point season.
He got a lot of unfair hate because a bunch of people hero Sutter got fired and they blamed him. Not just hate but it was personal especially by the person who started this thread.
He did everything he could do to fit in and play our way but effort and attitude has never been an issue with him.

There was a lot of unnecessary personal hate towards Huberdeau for sure.
He somehow took the blame for Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving and the locker room issues that followed (which was not his fault at all) and then the entirety of the blame for the 22-23 Flames struggles that ended with Sutter being fired and he was blamed for that too.
It's awesome to see him getting rewarded now because IMO I think he's tried hard most of his time as a Flame and has worked hard defensively, but has now figured out how to rebuild his game to figure out how to also produce offensively in the confines of a more responsible system.

His ice time was cut by almost 3 minutes his first season here. It’s hard to make any impact when you aren’t playing especially for a top player. If you don’t make a play or mistake you want to get back out and make up for it. Hard to do when you are sitting on the bench. Not sure what happened with Sutter that year.
He’s back up to 18:30 now this year. You can see it on his face he’s having fun and enjoying it again. He’s also probably playing the most restrictive system right now. We try to play a low event game on both sides.

He’s playing a lot more physical. He’s way more engaged when he does. A lot of work in front of the net too.

Him being a bit more physical doesn’t change the fact he gave full effort before. He got stapled to Kadris wing while he went for a skate with the puck what did you want him to do ? Sutter was awful and crushed his confidence and buried him.
It’s great to see him doing well. He’s done everything asked of him since coming here. Even Huska said people don’t see it but he takes a lot of guys under his wing to help them out since he’s been here.

Even if Huberdeau doesn’t score another point this season, his contract will still be a better value than Nurse’s. With Nurse, the Oilers would be better off paying him not to play.

Now a 64 point and 35 goal pace. 17 points in his last 13 games.

You have to give the player full marks for rebuilding his game this way. He's actually going to become a player you could win in the playoffs with.

82 games played in calender year 2024 for JH.
24 goals 41 assists.
Still has the tricky little plays that need a finisher.

He is harder on pucks, more physical more regularly, and he has stopped forcing pucks unnecessarily. All my gripes about him as a player are eliminated. All the talk about poor character or lack of effort was just nothing more than uncalled for bitterness from some people in my opinion. Effort and character are two of the consistently strong traits that he seems to have as both a player and as a human being.
I also think that he is playing with two players that fit his playstyle now. Kadri and Pospisil both bring speed and good shots, they can handle hard passes, and they can also make plays (nobody talks about Pospisil's playmaking, but it is surprisingly strong!).
Hope he keeps it up. He has been on heaters before in both seasons as a Flame, but at the same time, he has also had season-long heaters in the past as well. I really think that Florida dumped him because he didn't play the right way, and when he came here, this organization demanded that he play the right way no matter what. Both Sutter and Huska wouldn't bend, and I think it is really paying off. He has added so much more grit and determination to his game, and he is rarely on the wrong side of the puck now 5on5. People will point that he was used on the PK in Florida, but I don't think he was a strong 5on5 player there. I think he has figured out how to produce while being a more complete player.
Hopefully he just continues doing exactly what he is doing. He has been effective, and his production is just coming along for the ride.

I thought that was the kind of game you see from a scorer. Not really all that noticeable but two big plays that result in Flame goals and points for him. And that shooting percentage keeps ticking up. Good for him.

Who would have thought he would be outscoring McDufus at this point of the season?

Kadri deserves some credit here (as much as he frustrates me in other areas).
