Nothing but love for this trade.
He was a fan favourite for a spell, but the dude is a flawed hockey player.
Snagging a 3rd and 5th? Sounds good to me. Focus on the future, and leave today in the hands of youth.

Honestly Conroy has waited longer to pull the trigger on some of these than I thought he would (being a rookie gm)
He had some patience, but not quite enough in this case.
Hopefully there's another shoe to drop with the cap space cleared up. It appears this was a condition to the trade. So maybe they're eyeing something/someone else?

I am not sure why a 3rd rounder in 2026 is worth less than one in 2024. When the 2026 draft rolls around and it can be used, it will have the exact value of a 3rd rounder. Unless you are planning on not following the Flames at that point, it doesn't really matter.

Yeah I'm kind of liking it less as I think about it. If Conroy wanted to trade into the third round this summer, this package probably doesn't get it done. Arguably we got less for Zadorov than what we paid. Which is irrelevant really, other than most people would agree he is a better player now.
I wish the third was this year, I'd feel better about the return.

It’s like investing. Money in the future is worth less than money now

It's the same as with money. Money is more valuable now than getting the same money in the future. The asset is available for earlier use.

If that's true I'd like to trade you a current year's 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th in two years.

I think we all loved and over valued the intangibles. Will miss big Z and maybe they can bring him back down the road. Don’t hate the trade if it’s part of a bigger package of deals going forward.

The thing I don't like about it is that if that asset turns into an NHLer, it's realistically not until like, 2030. Still nice to have but it's pretty irrelevant for a current re-tool/rebuild/whatever you wanna call it, unless maybe you flip it in another trade

I'm confused by people not liking this. Flames took their least desirable UFA and turned him into two picks AND no cap retention or dead weight coming back in return. Now they have more flexibility in making deals for our actual GOOD UFAs. If we want to see good picks or prospects coming back to the Flames for our top UFAs, cap space is going to have to move and now the Flames have the option to retain (more) or take a player back, if necessary.
If the Flames don't have cap space, then Conroy relies on the other team having space, which limits the number of teams that can compete for our top UFAs. This trade actually helps expand the market and lands two picks.
I'll crap on the Flames if the duff one on Tanev or Hanifin, but not now.

He was months from coming off the books, regardless.
Conroy'd better have something in mind for that space this season then.

Nothing wrong with being good in 2030. The only reason nobody cares about 2030 is because it's not now.

Fully agree. Trying to "win" every trade right now has us holding the bag on a few UFAs post deadline.
Let's accumulate picks and keep our cap clear for more trades. Every deal is viewed through the lens of 3yrs from now who's on the roster.
