We should all be thankful that the Oilers are winning a game or two against other bottom teams. That way they can pick another Broberg, Holloway or Bouchard in the 8-14 pick range. Imagine they finished bottom 3 and got Easterman or won the lottery and got Celebrini. No ****ing thank you. Win some games, dump assets for a last push, finish with 90 points and draft 14th. Sounds like a perfect denouement for the McDrai era in Edmonton.

Do we really want that era to be over? They're hanging on to the end of their prime and we've seen how it's gone. Might be better to watch them pay even more for their 30s.

It's a good point.
Overpaying those two to play into their 30s when they'll be worse and provide diminishing value for two cap-handcuffing albatross contracts sounds like a recipe for an even more underperforming team. With how they've been mishandled and overplayed, I'd imagine the decline could be more pronounced than with other players, or we could see chronic injuries coming up as their bodies age.
I don't think i'll ever get tired of McHelmetBurn stink-eyeing his own players on the verge of elimination.

Yes I would be thrilled to see them lose the best player in the world...again. Especially with how much those two dominate the Flames

How much is McDavid going to get? The current highest paid player is McKinnon and he is $12.6 M. With the current cap, the most a player can make is $16.8 M (20% of the cap).
I'd say, McDavid is at least $15 M, and maybe more. That would make Drysaddle a bit less, maybe $14 M.
Add in Nurse at $9.25 M, The Tenderness at $5.125, and Hyman and $5.5 M and we get $48.125. That leaves just shy of $36 M for the other 16-18 players.
No one in that core is getting better. They are all at their peak or in decline.

I can't imagine that McDavid wants a legacy of being part of bad Oilers teams that couldn't get it done. His people can read this thread and see where they are headed. Why would he stay?

McDavid will get max. Someone will pay it. If Edmonton is smart (nope) they'd do a sign and trade.

Not sure about it. Draisaitl signed for 11.33% of cap. McDavid for 16.67%. 28% of cap for those two, and the Oilers had 72% to ice a team around them.
Their argument is going to be, have we done anything to not deserve those numbers to go higher? Then we get watch the Oilers try to win with McDrai's best years behind them as they enter their 30s and having some number lower than 72% to spend on the rest of the team.
Could be good.

If McDavid can't read the tea leaves and see that that team is going nowhere but down and he re-signs anyways (presumably to continue hanging out with nurse and wizzy) then he's not allowed to get as worked up as he gets every time they come up short.
You know exactly what you signed up for. And a pay raise means the depth gets worse (if that's possible) to accommodate it.

Yeah, by that time the cap should be about $96-$97M, so he should be close to $20M. If he asks the Oilers to pay that for 8 years, will they say no?

It's going to be interesting to see how things unfold in the next two seasons. It's just a shame that Holland likely won't be the guy tasked with dealing with it. Then again what's the chances that the Oilers don't screw up hiring his replacement?

Katz would pay it just to keep his name recognition for the organization. I do think the Oilers will pay whatever it takes and it's just a matter of McDavid deciding between money and winning a cup/not living in Edmonton.

Mcdavid at 16M Drysaddle at 14M and they buyout Nurse in a year or two.

If McDavid is confident in what he gets as a UFA it's a one year difference (plus less any tax advantages, improved endorsement opportunities, limited as his personality may be, etc). If he pushes hard enough he doesn't even have to forgo that 8th year - he pulls a Tkachuk.

I fully expect the Canadian sports media to have them in the top 10 power rankings this week.

It is also buyout proof. If in June of 2026 they decide to buy Nurse out, cap saving would be 1.5M for the first year and then 733k the next 3. Would be on brand for the Oilers to have 8M dead cap space for the remaining good years for McDavid.

It is also all signing bonuses on the backend, so the buyout is really ugly

I have to believe that he is looking forward to getting out of that organization but I also believe the Oilers will bend over backwards for him because without him and Draisaitl it's going to be hard to fill that arena and the Oilers will go from Canadian media sweethearts to yesterday's news.
