If the Flames suck and Phillips doesn't this place will have a meltdown.

I don’t think a meltdown, I think they’ll be new and inventive ways to pretzel logic justification as to why cutting Phillips loose and not giving him a shot was the right answer, after dominating the AHL.

Honestly honestly it comes down to Darryl Sutter. He ruined him for no real good reason because he lost his coaching mind last year. Oh well, time to move on, as others have said it happens to every team but to try and pretend the Flames didn’t screw it up is just not being honest.

Phillips would've been a UFA regardless. He was offered a contract by the Flames, he chose to sign elsewhere. He is a UFA again at the end of the season. At most we missed out on 1 season of team control.

That said, I'm happy for Phillips and want to see him succeed. Even with Ovi and Backstrom, I remain skeptical about his line's ability to retrieve pucks, and play without the puck.

You guys are getting worked up about a pre-season lineup.

Scorp, I know you're a Phillips fan, and that's cool. But you might consider spending less time - and zeal - reporting stuff like this, and more time reporting stuff about Flames. You're going to blackball yourself.

I'm not too concerned about that, honestly. I'll post about Phillips as I see fit. I think I've been pretty even-handed and consistent.

A post is a far cry from an actual column or journalistic offering; and even then if you wish to report on a former prospect it’s you decision. I’d happily read that too just so you know. Being black balled for being excited about a former prospect you reported on for the better part of 4 years is a hilarious cautionary warning that is hard to take seriously.

I find it interesting that there's a 15 page thread here regarding a career AHLer. I think it's unfortunate how Darryl treated him last season and he probably deserved to get in a few more games but there's not been a single day that I've ever felt that the Flames had something there with this player that got away. I'm certainly not rooting against him as I hope he can carve out an NHL career but I never saw the fit in Calgary where Dube, Coronato, Coleman, and Pelletier are all under 6 feet tall.

Based on what though...? The guy was a multiple time AHL all star and one of the top scorers there. We never got to see what he could be with the Flames because he was never given a shot.

Man. why can't people just be happy for others? You know it's a game right. I wish all the personal success in the world to Phillips. He isn't part of the Flames organization anymore. Pause being a fan of the team for a minute. This player wasn't given the opportunity to succeed here and now that it seems he is being given that opportunity elsewhere, why not be ecstatic for the guy? I hope he ends up playing the full season on the first line and drops 25 goals, 50 points. Will that happen? Who knows. Is it likely? Not really. Do I wish it? Of course. Imagine the impact that would have on his life and his family.

And if that means people will take shots at Sutter and the Flames...then so what? The farmer has taken his ball and went back home to Viking with another massive paycheck. He isn't bothered and neither should you be.

The AHL is littered with players who scored like Phillips and were never given a chance because of size. It is what it is. I haven't seen this much hand-wringing over such an inconsequential player since the days of Jason Morgan being lost on waivers.

I think the difference is that Phillips spent SEVEN Years with the organization. The AHL might b e littered with guys like Phillips but those guys don't end up in their drafted organization's system for 7 years awaiting their turn.

Especially when organizational need was THEIR position (RW) and lack of scoring at certain times during those 7 years.

For Phillips not to get a chance even in those circumstances for atleast 25-30 games was a gross mismanagement by the organization and shows they didnt learn much from the Sam Bennett fiasco.

Yup, seven years with the organization. Not many prospects get that level of opportunity or commitment from one team. Phillips had plenty of opportunity and never impressed. The only reason Phillips is getting a chance in Washington is because of Mitch Love. No Love on staff and Phillips doesn't even get a contract offer. He's got an ally and an advocate for him on the staff. He needs to take advantage of that because he won't have similar advocacy anywhere else.

But they do. There are tons of stories like Steve Tsujura, Mitch Lamorieux, etc.
