I wouldn’t be upset if Mittlestadt was the centrepiece of a Hanifin return. He could be great with Huberdeau.

He was rushed. When Adams came in he recognized that and sent Mittlestadt back to the minors. With half a season in the AHL, he found his game again.
People complain about the Flames not giving young players a chance, but far more careers have been hurt by players being rushed to the NHL than by spending too much time in the minors.

The NHL is not where you develop players, thats why there is a farm team.

Um, 21 is still very young for a dman to step into the NHL. Esp for a development project like Poirier.

Awesome glib answer, but I was hoping for some actual substance behind the claim. Is he physically not prepared? Mentally not prepared? A glaring weakness in his game? Sucks in one aspect of his game? What is it?
Being skeptical of pretty much every prospect I am most excited about Poirier and his growth over the last two years. He was challenged to be better in his own end in junior and he took that to heart. His first year as a pro was revelation in what we have on our hands. One of the top scoring defensemen in the league as a rookie and he was a plus player in his own zone. He was excellent in the AHL and could continue his growth being exposed to the NHL game. He also brings a skill we desperately need on the blueline, so if handled the right way (this is why Huska was hired) and sheltered, he could step in and contribute.

And players do not adjust and learn the NHL game while playing in the AHL. You have to bring players up and give them opportunity to experience themselves. Not saying full time player, but Poirier could definitely use some exposure to the speed of the game.

When he’s older? Lots of NHL defencemen don’t break into the league until they’re 22-23.
Look at the Stanley Cup champs. Zach Whitecloud got his first taste of the NHL at 23 and became a regular at 24. Alec Martinez wasn’t a regular with LA until he was 23. Brayden McNabb got a taste of the NHL at 21 but spent the next couple years in the minors and didn’t stick in the NHL until he was 23.

For sure but he simply isnt there....yet.
Nothing wrong with him playing another year in the AHL and getting a better understanding of where his weaknesses are and how to clean them up. He wont have that opportunity in the NHL though.
I didnt think he had a chance a couple years ago, but he really did take a big step last year and proved he is taking things seriously in an effort to be an NHLer. That really bodes well for him and the club.

I’m in the minority but I think Poirier is the second best prospect in the Flames system. I think he has the potential to be a top pair dman. He took the feedback on his defensive play to heart.

If hanifin is going to Florida then Lundell needs to be the main piece since they don’t have picks. Might be the only time to buy him since he had a bit of a sophomore slump. Hanifin with an extension for Duclair and Lundell.
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Duclair
Mangiapane - Kadri - Sharangovich
Pelletier - Lundell - Coleman
Dube - Ruzicka - Duehr
Weegar - Andersson
Kylington - Zadorov
Gilbert - Stecher
Markstrom
Wolf
Tanev, Vladar, Backlund all go for picks. Maybe Conroy can nab a defenseman in free agency too. Coronato starts in the A.

I just went and checked Duclair's stats, the three previous years before this one when he was injured he averaged 0.71 PPG which over an 82 game season makes him a 58 point player, with an average of 29 goals per season. And he makes three million dollars per year.
Yet people here call him a cap dump or a throw in lol. A throw in is what that Shagorevitch guy from the Devils is.

Well a more serious answer would be that he should be wherever he can get the most ice time and develop the best. The Flames are not going to be competitive this year but nonetheless they will have an established top 4 on the backend. And they will likely have their PP1 established with no room for Poirier. So he gets 5/6 minutes and limited PP time. I think it would be better for him to play 22 minutes a night in the AHL and be the guy rather than be a 5/6/7 dman on the big club.

I think the "problem" with Duclair is that he's basically never played a full season, will be 28 by the time the season starts, and he only has 1 season left on his contract.
He's a good player, but we need to have something more substantial for one of the most valuable assets we (will) have moved in a long time.

He turns 28 in two months. He is not a guy that a team trying to get younger targets in trades. He is a year and a half older than the guy we would hypothetically be trading to Florida.

That's fine. But I bet if the trade is made people here will suddenly stop calling him a throw in and a dump.

Yes I agree, and my point was that it is even more ridiculous to call Sharangovich a throw-in
