It would be a pretty big gamble by both players to not sign extensions coming off of career years when they don’t know how well they’ll fit in with their new team. If their production drops it could cost them as UFAs so I’d imagine that if they aren’t willing to sign before the season starts we’ll be seeing a trade as their willingness to gamble would be a pretty clear indication that they don’t want to be here.

you honestly think either of those guys wanted to fly across the continent in the middle of July to do a 30 minute presser?

I have no idea if it matters to Kessel, but he is 44 points from hitting 1000. If that actually matters to him, playing in Calgary’s top 6 (ideally for him on Hubredeau’s RW) gives him the best shot at that.

I love Hotdog Phil as much as anyone, but I'm not sure he's 1st line material anymore.
Would still be nice to snag him at a reasonable price though.

I think you're responding to a poster who just wants to be angry for the sake of it.
They said it reeks of the organization being cheap.
You could fly both players on a private plane with all the perks the ultra rich get- and they may still find it completely disrespectful to make them come to Calgary for as you said - a 30 min pressure.
Its not about being cheap, its about respecting the players.
It's crazy anyone would condemn the players or the team for not making them come to Calgary today. What a waste of ones time would that be.

Terrible take. It’s 2022 and there’s just no need to fly players across the continent for a 30 minute session. I’m positive neither player had plans to be in Calgary today last week and this fits their holiday schedule much better.

It's quite obvious that someone was hearing incorrect information, judging by what Huberdeau has stated...

Yeah, but I'm just looking for a comparable on how long it might take to hammer out a long term agreement. The situations aren't exactly the same obviously. They weren't going to sign immediately obviously so I'm just looking for an indication on when they might (if they do).

Tkachuk and Gaudreau both knew this was coming and got to pick their destination. This was sprung on Huberdeau and Weegar late Friday night. Even getting the Zoom call today meant working around their schedules because they had prior commitments on Saturday and Sunday.
I'm sure the Flames are already working with both guys to get them out here in the next week or two so they can find somewhere to live and to somewhat get to know the city with training camp starting in less than 8 weeks.

Seems like it was a bit of a Purple Monkey Dishwasher situation. One poster said Huberdeau spends some time in Calgary in summers. Someone read that, told another forum that he trained here in the summer. Next person heard that and turned it into: Huberdeau trains in Calgary every summer.

That poster (jg13) seemed very sure though, and CP is usually pretty reliable and this person has been here since 2013.
It’s possible they were mistaken, and no worries if that’s the case
It’s also possible that Huberdeau doesn’t have a lot of incentive to bring this up as it may…..
1. Cause a weakened bargaining position with the Flames of extension talks have in fact started (doesn’t want to tip his hand that he already loves the city and spends a lot of time here)
2. Maybe huberdeau realizes that Calgary has a large hockey-crazed fan base and telling everyone that he spends a chunk of his summer here already might cause rabid fans to start digging into his personal life.
Might just be a case where it’s easier in a press availability to say “yeah I came once for stampede but am not too familiar with the city”

Possible they weren't expecting Calgary to land him.

And to be fair, Calgary at the time had Gaudreau and Tkachuk on left wing. Who could have predicted this?

Also odd how they said that the mountains look nice yet we know the Panthers went dog sledding and those two were even paired for that.
Did they have a bit too much from the flask that day? Seems hard to not remember the rockies.
