There are so many podcasts available though. Something like 32 thoughts gets listeners because the broadcast platform drives the podcast and vice versa.
The challenge with any podcast is reach and scale. You need to have a unique hook or be a big name.

Think of all the different snack/entertainment/mindless brackets we could have! It'd be great.

I always get a chuckle from your looping pics of Rob Kerr, and it has everything to do with the morning show and how they had so much fun and laughs at his expense

He might be making that now (I have no clue), but at least he won't have to wake up at ungodly hours every day.
|
I doubt he's making that now in radio. I bet he just said I'm not being paid for what I'm worth and wants other options to look at.
I will say I don't know what local radio salaries are though.

Pinder is still here for one reason, and that’s to take Derek Wills’ job.
Just a hunch, but I suspect the economics of podcasting about Calgary sports are less than optimal.

I mean the number of times they referenced 3AM on the call with Virk today kinda shows me where the thoughts are.
Combination of poor pay, friends getting sacked, possible other changes w/r/t rights - and having to do that at some ungodly hour? Pack it in.
Worth it to spend more time with Rhett's dog.

I think you underestimate the value of podcasts with listenerships. I know when Boomer and Pinder were doing their impromptu instagram lives during their COVID outages a few months back, they were getting ~5k viewers. With an audience that big, you can make a living on it. If you can 4x that by widening your audience, it'd be much more profitable than a radio gig.
just get ready for Casper reads. And VPN/Pillow ads.
How many live listeners do you think the morning show got?

Someone like Rhett Warner might make $150k in salary for his gig on the radio or when he was on it. Helped with sponsorship sales and such. Enough of a salary to justify waking up that early for a few hours and it paid enough bills to make sense with the time off to boot.
Someone like Boomer might be in the $80k range, not great but it can pay some bills and bring in a decent income for a dual income household. Throw in the perks of the job in terms of sports tickets, pension, side hustle connections and some food and beverage, etc and it was an alright job for a while. Lower on the totem pole for other talents.

I believe the top hockey podcasts get a few hundred K in terms of listeners. Maybe they can monetize something at a lower number, but as a side hustle.
Which is probably the play. I wouldn't be surprised to see a podcast with Rhett and Boomer, because they like doing it. For Boom it would be a side hustle alongside a more 9-5 job. For Warrener he doesn't need the money.
I don't think you can make a living on a podcast that gets 20K listeners. I might be wrong.

Jason Gregor and Dustin Nielson in Edmonton are both transitioning into podcasting. Gregor is involved with Daily Faceoff and ############. Nielson has several different pods. Both of them see the writing on the wall with traditional radio, especially considering their station does not hold Oilers rights.
Andrew Walker is aligned with Ryan Jespersen who has made a made a nice transition from terrestrial to steaming/podcasting.
Dean Blundell in Toronto is another ex-radio guy that has done very well with podcasting.
The problem with most podcasts is that they suck. That wouldn't be the case with Boomer. He's got the talent, he's got the contacts and the following. If he aligns himself with the right people in some sort of of turn-key operation he has potential to make a decent living. IMO

Prime talent, long tenure. Rogers will pay morning talent. I bet he's in the 150k range easy. It's his replacement that will be making peanuts.

Is there any reason the flames can't just produce their own "radio" broadcast and stream it on the internet and maybe have someone simulcast it if necessary?

Pinder's wife is also a doctor so I think Pinder makes enough for his drinking money and to go on trips with his buddies too....yup you got it, drink!! Ha ha. His hours work well for him because it allows him to be around for most of the day & evening with the twin boys while the wife (I assume) brings home the heavier dough. Nothing wrong with that at all, but Pinder does have that situation. Not saying he doesn't need to work but they probably aren't doing too bad overall as a family I would assume as he seems to be skiing in the mountains or travelling or looking for a newer house often.
