Grigorenko was a middle of the first round pick I think.

Yak at least played 350 games. Juolevi's only played 41 games. Reinhart, 37. Cam Barker 310 (where all the others are at 1000 except Malkin), Zherdev, Svitov, Chistov. Dal Colle is pretty close.

Juolevi wouldn't count. That list is from 2005-2013 and he was 2016.

It was only bad because we got that player instead of the one that went ahead of him. There was so much talk that the Flames were going after Draisaitl. There were some really good players drafted in that year. If the Flames only suffered more during the 2014 and 2015 rebuild years, they could've had Drai and McDavid or Eichel.

I'd like to see if these percentages changed after 2013. I feel like scouting and analysis are much further ahead these days, plus the Flames and Oilers probably single handedly dragged down the average success rate in the years between the lockouts.

There was also talk that the Flames considered Nick Ritchie and Jake Virtanen at 4th overall.
I'm glad they picked Bennett, but what a terrible, terrible, refrigerator filled draft that was for the Flames.

Exactly. A lot of luck is involved, which is why the Flames should be proactive and load up. Cash in on the abundance of assets now and convert them to futures. Then you significantly increase your odds of finding quality players. You also have better currency to make trades. And then your core comes up together. A core that hopefully has a lot of cost savings in it. Once you have a strong core and cap space, you should have a much easier time supplementing the roster with free agents as well. This not only gives you the greatest odds, but it also allows you to improve in multiple ways.
Right now, the Flames can only improve by free agents and their own late picks. Neither of these are very likely to make a significant difference over the next few years. This will keep them afloat until guys like Lindholm or Hanifin decide to bolt and the team is forced to rebuild and in a much weaker position.

LOL, this was actually a good thread until the MT- Huberdeau blockbuster trade! Still got some big holes to fill. Just hope it's not just another mediocre season just to get into the playoffs when so much more is at stake at the 2023 entry draft.

Remember 2014-15 how we made the playoffs and said McDavid who and then 2015-16 we crashed back down to earth in the wrong year?

The only scenario (which is a super longshot) that Die Hard for Bedard is back on is, if Tre finds out early on (before deadline) there is no chance of resigning and Habs offer up their 2023 1st. (again, next to zero chance, but sprung to mind)

Not sure how long you guys have been watching the Flames. But they are never going to tank or do a full rebuild. Ever.

Did we not trade away our first? I can’t keep track of the firsts that we have traded.
