Avs trade Palat and $2.5 mil to the Sharks for Lucas Carlsson

So in the end the Sharks got a 2nd, a 3rd and 2.5 m in cap for Lucas Carlson. Wowzas!

I'd like to hear an explanation. I questioned the original deal and now it's just even stranger.

Can both GMs explain how these deals came to pass?

In fact I'm going to need an explanation before I process it.

Everyone voiced their opinion on the first trade. Still hopeful the first trade works out as I had way too many picks and cap but short good young players

Todays trade I don’t see as a bad one when okposo went for the same type of picks?

Still high on Carlson and the cap space I still have way too much still. Get your offers in!

I was offered Palat for Carlson and I took it. Today I was offered these picks for Palat (in Lehner talks) and I took it. Palat sitting on my 3rd line and I have Bjorkstrand on my 4th who can move up.

In fact, I put him in the block and couple days ago and not one single offer.

I don’t need Palat, it’s that simple on my end but I really shouldn’t have to explain myself on any trade.

I don’t think anyone is questioning you?

First trade was deemed bad todays I don’t see it as bad. I’m not going to pass up a good trade because of the first one

Palat is worth a 2nd in 24 no question especially when the 2nd is a pick of a team looking very good. 45 to 56 overall range

Grant asked us both to explain.

Neither one of us should need to explain anything. Circumstances change all the time and we are talking about Palat and picks, not a blockbuster.

I can ask for an explanation at my discretion
But this deal isn’t the problem I guess. It’s the original one
It would be nice if our veteran gms didn’t take accept unfair deals from new gms when they are offered. Instead it’s a chance to help them understand player value. Better for the league in the long run
Particularly when deals involve asset weak organizations
Bleeding them dry doesn’t help the league

I don't think SJ needs to explain. They had a great deal x 2. I'm curious why the Avs wanted to get rid of Palat on the first deal...They even retained 2.5 m. And then traded back for him and didnt even get their retention back.

I never said I wanted to get rid of him I just said I doubt I get a big return for him. Is a 2nd on 24 and a 3rd a big return? I guess it will depend on where the Flames finish next year but a 2nd 2 years from now isn’t a ton

I also have 14 or so picks in 23 and we can only carry so many echl players. The timing when you sign them makes some very valuable.

I think where the problem is I rolled the dice on Carlson as a potential steal. You might disagree with it but he should get some good minutes this year

I came into the league with a organization that had a few high end aging players but not a lot for prospects or picks. I’m still loaded in picks and cap space but feel like I added a couple good players for cap space and picks that aren’t first rounders. I did also sign Palat as a free agent so basically added him for nothing as I had almost $30 mil space at one point.

Unless something changes in my personal life that forces me to quit I will not quit. I’d rather be in a league where everyone is fair game. No need to take it easy on me. These trades aren’t franchise altering deals either

That's kind of my only question as well. The first trade, I didn't know the player, and might not have liked the value, but it's a learning curve in the league and this wasn't a backbreaking deal either way. Same with the player or picks on the second one. I've considered reversing deals to get players back, too. But I'm not sure why the retention didn't translate.

MJK has done well sure. I guess the bigger question is the learning the COL gm gains from watching Lucas Carlsson. In my opinion be isn't much but let's see. Been wrong before. Also I want to mention if you are going to us okposo as a comparable. I signed him for free, held on for a year and then got picks for him. So that's the whole life cycle

While my team went 9-3 in the preseason it was mostly off the Offense. Defense and Goaltending was a bit suspect. I wanted to address this by adding a high DF player. Dumoulin has a 90 DF rating and should help in that regard.

Thanks to Sportsjunky for the deal

Nashville brings back franchise favorite Bryan Rust and cheese in exchange for Sean Monahan from the Sharks.

Love me some Moneyhands. Always a spot on the Sharks roster for hair like his.
