Some comments on here are really silly. A comedian’s job is to tell jokes. This isn’t Rocks first gig and he was asked to do his gig his style but maybe PG which is what he did. His look back and muttering that “I could go…” showed he contemplating ripping a new one but didn’t bother. I wish he did. Smith has been a phoney nice guy since day one. He cares about his brand at all costs, phoney smiling and playing the nice guy card at every turn. Over the years there have been enough alarms on his true character but they’ve been squashed because he’s a box office heavyweight. The guy is a jerk. I wish there was more backlash to he could get it for an unprovoked attack. Did Rock know about her simple medical issue? Is it a serious issue? It doesn’t matter. He did his job and got assaulted and the spineless there did nothing. Wish he hit back with further jokes but he held back. Clearly an expose on the Smith family who are disgusting to begin with. Their egos got them in this situation and the comedy outlets will have a field day. Just wait until they turn it around and try and play PR victim somehow. Suckers born every minute.

Part of me thinks this was all contrived and just to get attention on Will Smith.
Find it hard to care about this at all.

The joke and context of the joke are completely irrelevant. It was still just that. A joke
You don't have to think it's funny, you sure as hell don't have to play along, what you definitely don't do is assault someone because your feelings got hurt.

An attempt to suffocate every one of them is futile.
How about we learn to call things out in the right way, at the right time, and in the right manner?
This, wasn't it.
That's the point.

I disagree. I think it was just an absolutely perfect reaction. Full style points.
Nobody would have given a crap if Will Smith had done anything else at any other time. All the same people defending Chris Rock being a scumbag would still be defending him being a scumbag for what ever their stupid reasons are.
Fact is, Chris Rock was being a scumbag and fully deserved to get publicly slapped for that.

I grew up watching Smith (still love Fresh Prince to this day), but the guy is clearly a bit touched, and a hefty portion of my respect for the dude swirled down the drain with this stunt. I don’t understand some of the takes. Namely, the idea that it was somehow staged (like, really? I know the Oscars “needs ratings” but come on…), or that Will’s the white knight here for putting Rock in his place after joking about a bald head (alopecia or not).
I’m not the hugest Chris Rock fan but I think what others have said in here is true - super benign joke and one that pales in comparison to what a lot of other comedians could dish out. Then in typical Hollywood weirdo, scientology-riddled fashion, the dude gets up to accept his award with some teary eyed fart-sniffing apology (to everyone but Rock) about how God is compelling him to protect people around him in his ongoing campaign to be a “vessel for love”. Just like in the movie! So cringe.
Finally, the dude’s seen booping up and down and gettin’ jiggy with it a short time later at the after party. What a cheese head.

My guess is that Rock didn't actually know about the alopecia thing, and probably wouldn't have made that joke if he did.

Sign me up for punching someone..actually must be a Hollywood D-bag thing though cause Ive heard it it all 25+ years..mind you the bad times was elementary where kids didnt know any better...
As someone with AU (Alopecia Universalis) I thought the joke was quite funny

This is factually untrue. He roasts people for the height, stereo types on their background and much more. Also

I actually enjoy a lot of humor that's actually funny.
Something being a joke is not a defense, never was. Any good comedian would tell you that's an excuse for hacks and bullies, and any comedian worthy of the title can defend their jokes without resorting to "it was just a joke".
But I'm done here. I know that when talking to an American audience this is just futile. Still wanted to say my piece.

I can’t stop thinking about a similar encounter I had with a guy.
It was just a few guys there, he makes an absurdly rude comment about my girlfriend out of nowhere (we weren’t friends), and I quickly shot back with a joke about his wife along similar lines to his jab. He got up, slowly walked towards me, I’m standing there confused and smiling exactly like Chris rock, and he grabs me by the throat and slams me up against the wall. Said similar things that will smith said about never to talk about his wife. ####ing insane. There must be some deep rooted #### for that to be a trigger point like that.

You didn't think a comedian should get slapped at a black tie event on national television by a self-obsessed multimillionaire because said comedian told a stupid, not particularly funny joke? You're defending scumbags, and you would in any context, I'm sure!
Have to love people whose take on a dumb thing that happened is to personally attack the character of literally everyone who disagrees with my take. Who's the scumbag again?

So who gets to decide what is funny and what isn't? Do I just get to punch Amy Schumer because I think she sucks?
