Large scale maybe not super common, but overall yeah it's not too rare. Basically, just build the path you want it to take, then dam off the path it's taking with sheet piling, sandbags, pumps, whatever, to direct it to where you want it. I've only done it temporarily to do work on or under the riverbed and then put the flow back to where it was afterward, but I imagine the same principles apply to something like this

In 1989, a major earthquake off the coast of California caused the collapse of elevated freeways in the San Francisco area and significant damage to infrastructure. How long did it take to rebuild? Bet it was weeks and that was 30 years ago.

Seriously?

Four years after Loma Prieta quake, not a single damaged freeway has been completely reopened.

Although the freeway reopened in stages between 1997 and 1999, it was not fully rebuilt until 2001 due to safety and reinforcement concerns.

The Bay Bridge was reopened within a month, but that only sustained damage on the 50 ft. of roadway where the upper deck collapsed, while the larger structure of the bridge was still in good shape.

I don't think there will be a Coquihalla for a while. Writing is on the wall there.
TCH / #3 / #99 have a shot in the near to relatively near future though.
Will be scrubbing any plans to drive to van/van Island from the docket for the next year or so I think. Congestion from the limited options and delays on those roads will suck.

We now have gas rationing. I found a gas station last night. It was backed up because ppl were fuelling up so many Jerry cans. Glad I got some though.
They better implement grocery rations right now. That's next.

The panick-hoarding is one of the things that irritates me most about people's reactions to these situations (including early covid). Sure, you rush to get your share, maybe you succeed. But by accumulating as much as you can manage, you potentially deny that resource to some person passing through who just needs to get home.
If you live in an urban area where transit exists and you can use simple resourceful thinking to make do, it makes the hoarding rather selfish and unnecessary. Really reflects our true nature when push comes to shove. Maybe the post-apocalypse films weren't that far off about how far people could spiral in such a circumstance.
Seems for every Hope Pizza Place, you have a hundred of these folks.

They announced this afternoon that Highway 3 is open for essential travel only. Better than nothing, at least some goods and people can get through.

Most of the solid waste from the LML is shipped to Cache Creek. At some point, they are going to start limited trash collection I think, especially after the floods diminish and clean-up starts.
Another thing to consider is that Canada ships a lot of food products out of Vancouver that other countries depend on. The effects of this disaster have the potential to disrupt food supplies in other countries.

I see a video of what was Hwy 8, Spencer’s bridge to Merritt.
That highway is now completely non existent for long stretches.

Saw news footage of grocery store produce sections being totally cleared out.
People over there realize that the fresh produce has a relatively short shelf life, and unless you're planning to eat it all right away is pretty wasteful to collect, right?
Why are people so dumb.

"Hi, I know it's early but can I have another 3 months of my blood pressure pills? I just got 3 months worth a months ago but I'm worried if there's a shortage"
Like you do realize if I give you another 3 months you'll have 5 months, and if there is a shortage then someone else gets none...
