So, I've noticed on YouTube there has been an increase in "news" channels that are not real. I made the mistake of posting one of them into the Tech portion of the forum before realizing it was some kind of AI fake news. That got me to start poking around at the different channels that were not being promoted to me.
It was interesting to see how many new channels were created this summer, they all have similar looks and feels and I believe they are all AI generated garbage. It was also interesting to see the 2011 channel but it looks like it was dormant until recently. Like one of these AI misinformation channels went out to find an existing account to add credibility.
Then I saw this video and it made me feel a bit better about being overly suspicious.
It just feels like it is going to be harder and harder for people to stay informed. Corporate media is feeding you their stories tilted toward the outcomes that they want you to come to and then if you run away from them to try and find other sources of information, you will then run into this collection of AI misinformation channels.

Yeah, we're basically toast at this point. It's probably too late for government intervention, especially since many of the most powerful world governments are actively encouraging or participating in the misinformation campaign. We're left hoping for one of the tech giants to benevolently start using their own AIs to screen out this crap from their platform. But that will never happen unless there is some economic reason for it to happen, which seems unlikely. The whole thing is depressing.

Well, no, I do not think it is too late for the government to start regulating... I think the bigger issue is the intentional lack of regulation that needs to be questioned.
I understand why the Republicans in the US are intentionally not regulating AI (they are being paid by Musk & Co to not do so) and even going to far as to trying to block the states from trying to add regulations... but what is the Liberals excuse?
I think they are just too corporatist and are pandering to the tech giants even if it is hurting the Liberal party... or the US has told us that we are not allowed to put in any regulations?
Yes, that is significantly true. Especially when you start comparing it to all of the alternatives.
Postmedia - American & Republican owned
CTV - Owned by Bell
Global - Owned by Corus
etc. etc.
CTV and Global may not be in the same realm of misinformation and propaganda as Fox Infotainment but they still pick and choose their stories based on what is approved by the people up the chain.
The Conservatives like to suggest that the CBC just does the bidding of the Liberal party but the truth is that most CBC reporters are just being honest and calling the Conservatives on their BS when they do it. The Conservatives hate that and would rather get a lapdog rag like Rebel News or Western Standard who will ignore truth and just smear propaganda.
In Alberta, the CBC is probably the most trustworthy news agency, followed by some independents like Nate Pike.

Do you think sentences mean the same thing when you swap words out? "money and power" are not the same as "shareholders and billionaires". To save everyone the tedium why don't you go look up some definitions and we can move on.
No, public broadcasters are not by their nature necessarily independent. Which is why it's important to ensure they operate that way. That doesn't mean eliminating them.

The NATPO is backed by a republican hedge fund and is incapable of writing anything critical of conservatives. How Canadians still trust it is beyond me. It doesn't even hide its partisanship anymore.
Because most Canadian (people) don't understand or care to understand where their information is coming from and how accurate it is beyond "this is what I've always trusted and read, I'm fine" or "I found this source that speaks the truth" (aka, tells me what I want to hear).
The CBC gets its source of money from all Canadians and only Canadians can fund it.
That's who holds power over them.
While they might have decision makers, those decision makers still answer to Canadians.
While there might be corruption (and there no doubt has been at time), it's a different story from media outlets owned by parties with a blatant conflict of interest
