Personal thought on this is the term is irritably long. Coleman showed he was great this past season with his hard work and sometimes skill. But he’s shown it one season plainly put. $100 to anyone who truly knew the guy prior to this year. So it is a gamble. Any time anyone seems to give a long term contract to a player who showed flashes of excellence, it tends to not work out well. I can’t say if it’s that the guy they signed feels they achieved what they set out to do, or there’s more pressure on them to live up to the contract, but it’s a big risk taken on. The dollar value is fine for a player of his ilk right now. Treliving is on the hot seat so I can see why he had to do this. I am concerned because of the term with the dollar value. There is a recency bias here. Hope it works out in our favour.

To be a below average 2nd liner as you suggest he would have to be in that forward number 6 range, which would be players 156 to 186
Players 156 to 186 average 1.55 Pts60
So no ... you're incorrect his numbers are actually above a 2nd liner.
Better to get in with inaccurate pessimism quickly though!

Excuse me boss
The Flames scored less than 1 goal how many times?
They lost by 1 goal how many times?
They lost their #1 offensive dman?
They desperately need scoring
What is wrong with me saying I hope Treliving is not looking to fix the scoring from Coleman
Who in the world is looking for Coleman for scoring

Also calling him a third liner for Tampa Bay is false.
In both the regular season and playoffs he played Top 6 minutes at 5v5, was first unit PK, but got no PP time which brings his counting stats and Total TOI down.

Oh man, I first saw the title and read it as "Blake Comeau". Had a little panic attack there.

The fact that he got no PP time and still put up good offensive stats says a lot

I will also say for all intent and purpose, I’d rather have Hyman at 7 years with a $5.5M hit, then Coleman at 6 year at $4.9M hit. I think Hyman is a really underrated player. I don’t like either long term but hyman has showed what he can do over a few seasons. I was laughing at the Oilers term but then the 6 year deal happens here. Not too big on it.

Never scored a lot. Not that big. Overrated probably due to a couple Cups with Tampa.
Looks to me like we’re paying 2nd line dollars for a 3rd liner.
|
Coleman got 22 and 21 goals in his last two seasons with the Devils, including 21 in 57 games. He was good enough that the Lightning had to give up a 1st and a solid prospect to acquire him.
He slotted into the 3rd line on an uber-stacked Lightning roster. On the Flames he’ll be a second line RW.

Lmao wut.
Just admit you know absolutely nothing about Coleman rather than writing out a lengthy post basically implying the same thing.
Coleman has put up excellent results going back to his time in New Jersey.
There's a reason the Lightning traded a 1st AND Nolan Foote (also a 1st) for Coleman, because he was an excellent player with New Jersey, and excellent in his time in Tampa

Anyone else fully expecting Oilers fans to latch onto a Hyman > Coleman narrative, particularly if Hyman rides shotgun with their big guns and fumbles his way to 30 goals and 65 points?

I love the player and think this an excellent signing. The term is too long, but that is the price you pay for a sought-after FA.
The Flames are a better team with Coleman in the lineup.

Coleman also played very well with a stacked Tampa team but he didn't really get much ice time with any of their star players and his numbers are off the charts good.
Less than 30% 5 on 5 with Hedman
Top dman played with was McDonagh though
40 out of about 800 mins with Point.
Goodrow was his top linemate.
He also put up 50 point pace with no PP time.
IMO he is not a mooch and his advanced stats are off the charts good and we got him for less years and AAV than Hyman who is injury prone. This is a much better deal
Sure there is risk but 6 years expires when he is 35.5 if the Flames are still playing in June.
Coleman is better than Backlund IMO and Backlund has been a good deal and still isn't killing us and he is 32
