Agreed.
Insane to downplay it. The evidence was there before our eyes all season. He did nothing but shut players down, make good exits and stay on the right side of the puck all season. About as consistently as you could ask for.

Tanev was exceptional last season. Almost too good to the point you have to expect some regression this season (hopefully not).

Exactly. He was fantastic and far exceeded expectations. I don't know if it's fair to count on that again.

This.
I said defensive defenders, I also said last year.
Why are people pulling Vlasic's career stats?
We're talking the season. It was a top 5 defensive d-man year for Tanev. And he put up the best performance for his role on the team, full stop.
People are so used to being wet blankets its like they don't know when to ease up.

It's funny how off the mark they seem to be. Just critical of everything, and in doing so end up looking like they don't actually know anything about what they're being critical on. Aren't aware of player performance/stats, or roles, or history... nothing. I've seen it several times today from a few of them and it's not even noon.

Oops I missed that it said defensive defenceman in djs post. My bad I guess he is top 5 defensively, though last seasons statistics should have a * for every player in the league as its nearly impossible to compare stats outside the division.
To get back on topic, it looks like our Flames are investing in a culture and style change toward becoming a better physical and defensive team. This is very exciting as a Flames fan as we have lacked identity since Hartley and the comeback kids.

If he was a dominant shutdown defenceman he should have been on the ice every time McDavid was out there.
He should have chased McDavid off the ice.
Next part of the legend of the Flames greatness 2020/21 was that Andersson/Gio actually did the heavy lifting.
The Flames had a top-5 Defense d-man ON THE 2ND pairing.
He was great and better than the moderate expectations that he had when he was signed. With Zardov getting more than 3.2M it make Tanev's contract look better.

Yeah it's weirdly common how easily people jump from "lack of team success" to "every aspect of every part of the team is awful". Tanev was phenomenal last year.
With Tanev on the ice, we allowed 1.40 goals/60. With him off the ice, we allowed 2.90 goals/60. His 1.4 goals/60 was 1st among defensemen with >500 minutes.
We missed the playoffs because of what happened with Tanev on the bench, not with him on the ice.

I was looking for a QoC stat. Didn't find it. Was Tanev up against the other teams best players, or was Gio in that role by habit and default?

Who is discrediting his season? I read some posters calling him top 5 in the league and others saying he was great, but not lets get ahead of ourselves. Why does it always have to be extremes with certain posters????

I like this deal, depending on what his next contract ends up being.
The need was for an offensive defenseman, but there were no options whatsoever.

That was my fault , I missed that it said top 5 defensive defenceman and thought it just said top 5 defenceman. Admitted my mistake, and also never said he was bad. I do think stats from last season are skewed though, let's see how he does this year, heck he might even do better with Sutter's system and better back-checkers.

I mean... Tanev & Hanifin played the most minutes 5v5 for the Flames and faced incredibly hard competition, but ok.

Some guy said Tanev wasn't even a top 5 defensive defenseman in the North Division last year

I couldn’t imagine spending so much time on a rival teams site playing the role of Debbie Downer in every possible thread.
Must be exhausting.

Keith was obviously better than Zaradov last season. The Hawks protected Connor Murphy, Riley Stillman, Caleb Jones ahead of Zaradov.

Last year.
Blackhawks relative stats.
CF% Relative
Zadorov -1.58
Keith -2.48
xGF% Relative
Zadorov +1.51
Keith -4.92

Huh?
He was literally 1st in xGA60 last season for all defensemen.
First.
There is an argument about calling him a top five defenseman given his lack of offence, but you're argument is just dead wrong.
Absolute beast #1 ranked shut down defender.
