My face is a bum!
|
This is my second favourite time ever that the Canucks tied it up short handed late against the Flames with the net empty and then the Flames came back to win it in overtime.

Lindholm is a beast. Markstrom is far and away the team MVP so far. Bennett looks so much better with Dube & Looch, and I thought Mackey actually looked pretty good despite the penalties. I think this year we're just going to have to take the good with the bad, but I'll take the victories how ever they come!

lets not forget about JG...9G, 7A, 16 pts...tied for 4th in goals and 10th in points...and most importantly, tied for 2nd in GWG with 3.
Yes the highest paid player on this team is abysmal!!

I'd like to be a contender, or a team that's on the path to being one. Right now, we're neither.

I think most fans here are realistic about the probability that this club, in its current form, is going to win a cup.
But sports is about enjoyment, so even if that's how one feels, it doesn't make sense to me to root against your team or not enjoy wins.
What people were objecting to is the notion, that the poster put forth, that he would prefer the team lose.

You ever read about the Streisand effect? Just let the curmudgeons come in and pass by. Pointing them out is like picking at a scab- you're only hurting yourself and causing more damage.

I'd agree. Hoping for the team to lose at this stage, with the roster make up they have doesn't make much sense for a Flames fan.
I don't think the current team has a snowball's chance in hell of winning a Cup. IMO they aren't even a legitimate contender for one. But I'm still going to hope they somehow find another gear or three, or maybe even get red hot at the right time to make a run at one.
They have enough really good pieces that if by some miracle the right player becomes available, it might just be enough to push this team to the next level. Not likely, but there is a better chance of that happening than there is of Treliving blowing it up IMO.

Must be a weird feeling being a Canucks fan and evaluating Hughes. He's got bags of offensive talent. That goal he scored where he turned Valimaki inside out was dirty. His points total are insane.
But he can't defend worth ####. I know young guys take a while to learn it, but hopefully he never does.

It was a good win but the Flames are also simply the better team than the Canucks. As others have mentioned, Milan Lucic is good and has been a good contributor.
That was a good fake/deke by Sean Monahan on the pass to Johnny Gaudreau, Monahan is a highly skilled player and the Flames are still missing that top line player for him to play with along with Gaudreau although Lindholm is pretty good.
Sucks for Nate Schmidt to put one in his own net again. Canucks have some good young players but it seems they're lacking in a bit of veteran leadership.

The Canucks constantly had a D man pinching to pressure our puck receiver on the boards on our break out attempts. This was causing them head aches trying to break out of our zone.
If the Flames can switch up their zone exits, with some small adjustments and get a guy behind the pinching D men, they could be getting a lot of odd man rushes or even breakaways.
I’d like to see Ward make some adjustments to expose this for Wednesday night.

The problem being one you're missing, which is that you are watching a game for the sake of entertainment and can't seem to actually enjoy yourself even in a win.
I will never understand the type of sports fan that is only in it for the wins, let alone those in it for the right kind of wins at the right time where anything less than the biggest prize is unenjoyable. Why do you guys do it? What's the point? Is there some imagined social importance to saying you're a Flames fan even when a playoff birth or winning a round wouldn't bring you any joy? Can you honestly say you even like hockey or the Flames if that's the case? You think putting on a jersey and having an opinion makes you a fan?
These same people talk about "realism" or how some random negative opinion is "correct" because it's negative. The only dose of realism here is the fact that if last night's win brought you no joy and no hope, you need a different hobby because you're wasting your life.
The reason the previously mentioned poster got "piled on" is because most people here are fans of the team, enjoy winning, and enjoy hockey. Hockey is entertaining, and when your favourite team wins? It's a nice little injection of positivity in your day.
You ever have an acquaintance that is constantly negative, a total pessimist? Some fun to be around, right? If negative people want to inject their own negativity into everything around them and pretend they're right to make them feel a little better about wallowing in their own inability to enjoy the parts of their life that are strictly there to increase their enjoyment, have at it. Just don't expect warm receptions from people who are capable of having a good time.

Don’t forget he’s the toughest meanest SOB in the league and gives every player on the Flames some extra confidence.

The thing about cycles though, is that you'd expect them to actually be cyclical. We're on a treadmill of mediocrity. We've been that way since the early 90s, aside from 2004-2009, and even in those years, we got past the first round only once.
I'm just tired of it, as are so many others. I still watch the games, and enjoy them (for the most part), but it's far removed from how I watched in 2004.

Oh. You just need to pull up playoff brackets from previous seasons. You'll find all the necessary information there.

I do enjoy watching hockey, including Flames games, but I enjoy it purely because of the entertainment value of the game itself. I don't get enjoyment via excitement of this team having the potential to do some damage moving forward, so my excitement is limited. Not sure why this is so hard to understand?
I don't expect the team I cheer for to be in contention every season; I'm not unrealistic, but when the team you cheer for has been average or below average for the last THIRTY years? It gets tiresome...for me at least. And that poster. And many, many others. What I'm saying is I get his frustration, and so do many others, but everyone just jumped down his throat for an opinion that was quite true.

Ah got it thanks.
So all victories last year for every team not named "Tampa Bay Lightning" were hollow.
Wow, that is a lot of hollow victories. Last season there were roughly 1500 "victories" and all but 43 were hollow. Why would anyone watch this sport? Why would they watch any sport?

Keep going. Dig up playoff brackets from even earlier years. Compare how far the Flames have got vs. other teams. You'll get there. Might notice a trend.

And just because Bennett is eating a lot #### lately....
He had a really important and sneaky "box-out" on the Lucic goal.
