Oversimplistic. I think most are on the women’s side here based on her between the lines plea for help in what is seemingly a dbag of a husband. If you seen indications of this behaviour, in general, would you marry a person like this? Maybe he has redeeming qualities (and probably does as he is human) with which a person may marry a person like this. Would it financial stability? Could be as well. One side of the spectrum is the aforementioned bad word. But it wasn’t necessarily attributed to this situation but athletes in general. It’s possible in any circumstance and it happens. Misogynistic word is a bit of a stretch for me. All in all I feel for his wife. What her motivations are in this circumstance I don’t want to speculate on aside from that what she mentioned which appears to be genuine.

I'm not even in professional hockey circles but in senior executive circles and this happens all the time. Men 10 years ago that couldn't get a date or find a companion and become wealthy at 50 yrs old and all the sudden they are irresistible to to young women....... listen I dont like it either but to take the ostrich approach and pretend it is not a common normal is just uninformed and frankly a poor take.
I will continue to proudly use the term "gold digger" since it is an all to common occurence.....

I just don’t understand putting so much effort into defending a term a segment of the population clearly finds offensive. Does it really hinder your life? How will you go on without using this word? Can people not just shrug and move on?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_digger
Etymology and usage
The Gold Digger (Judge, 24 Jul 1920)
The term gold-digger was a slang term that has its roots among chorus girls and sex workers in the early 20th century. In print, the term can be found in Rex Beach's 1911 book, The Ne'er-Do-Well, and in the 1915 memoir My Battles with Vice by Virginia Brooks.[2] The Oxford Dictionary[clarification needed] and Random House's Dictionary of Historical Slang state the term is distinct for women because they were much more likely to need to marry a wealthy man in order to achieve or maintain a level of socioeconomic status.
The term gold digger rose in usage after the popularity of Avery Hopwood's play The Gold Diggers in 1919. Hopwood first heard the term gold digger in a conversation with Ziegfeld performer Kay Laurell.
As an indication on how new the slang term was, Broadway producers urged him to change the title because they feared that the audience would think that the play was about mining and the Gold Rush.

Guy describes transactional relationship between older rich dude and young attractive woman, both of whom are consenting adults that understand the nature of the relationship.
Guy applies derogatory term, and the stigma related to that term, to just one party of the relationship, the woman.
Guy makes no comment on the responsibility of the other party in the relationship, the man, or their, presumably less than purely romantic, intentions.
Guy wonders why it might be considered misogynistic.
Am I all caught up?

Sugar Daddy
Plus there is a big difference between a young lady and a old rich gentlemen and a hockey player and an attractive wife
The former probably fits the historical definition of a gold digger
The later - well yes Ahetlets make money , but here’s something that may surprise some ….. women find athletes attractive ! Did you notice in every level of sport athletes tend to have attractive significant others. I know - mind blown
Also , athletes tend to have relatively higher confidence then the average man , and the guts to actually ask pretty ladies out (usually because they have had attractive ladies their whole life pay more attention)
You would be surprised how many attractive ladies would say yes to a date if you just ask like a normal person.
Chalking it up to $$ is actually demeaning to both sides

But this is a huge part of the problem, and a contributing factor to why it is so derogatory...
First, take a look at the etymology of the term provided by Jason14h:

So, the reason this may be the case is part of the socioeconomic history of men and women in the workplace, and the gender wage-gap this history has unfairly produced. There is really nothing different between pointing to the majority of "gold-diggers" who are women as proof of the stereotype, and pointing to US prison populations comprised of a majority of black men to then suggest crime is a racial problem.
Second, you are again missing the crucial point that the term—applied almost universally to women—is used with substantial frequency superficially, and it also functions implicitly to absolve the responsibility of men in a relationship. Labeling a woman as a "gold-digger" victimises the man, which is absurd given the power-imbalance in these relationships.

All fair points. I am more than happy to call men gold diggers as well. I just think sometimes the dictionary definition/history behind terminology is what causes the issue. In my social group, the word gold digger is used to describe both women and men. It’s used by women to even describe themselves sometimes. I just think it’s used that way because no one attaches all the negative things from a historical perspective and more so associates with Kanye West Gold Digger song.
I mean I’m down to be a gold digger. Where do i apply ?
