Not directed at you specifically, but do people on this board need to be reminded that Gio is 37 years old? And he looked his age recently.

OEL would be here replace him. Otherwise you are counting on Hanifin who is very inconsistent or Valimaki who is always injured. Or drafting/aquiring another top D that can step right in. So much for the left D depth.

Would be great if OEL is as good as Gio or Hanifin, but unfortunately he isn't.

Again, even a declining Gio for two years at $6.75 >>> 7 years of Ekman-Larsson at $8.25 with a NMC to boot. No one doubts Gio is slowing down. But people wrote Chara off a few years ago and he played usefully for a long time afterward.

A stud 29 year old? Sure. But OEL isn’t. Gio had one more point in 6 less games as a matter of fact. And their PO performances were comparable too.

I am not worried about Giordano under-performing on that contract, even if it is only 2 years longer.

He didn't have a poor season. The Calgary Flames as a group had a poor season almost down to every single one of them. Peters adjusted the system and the Defence were jumping into the play a lot less.

When you look at Hartley's team, defence were in on a tonne of the goals - either goals, primary or secondary assists. We haven't seen as much this year in that regards. I think this slower transition creates less opportunities for defencemen to put up points.

How many players had an 'off year'? Most of the core, no? Because of that, I am not looking at Giordano and saying "The wheels are quickly falling off!".

As for his playoff performance... I will agree that it STARTED atrociously, but the last 3 or 4 games I thought he was much better. Brodie was awesome throughout most of it, while Giordano looked rather nervous and indecisive at times. I think when he got into the swing of things, his game calmed down and he didn't look like he was second-guessing himself all the time.

Let's see what this season brings. I don't think he fell off a cliff, and I still think that barring any moves (and having Brodie walk), that Giordano will be Calgary's best defencemen this season - and I mean ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD, not because I am anticipating everyone to suck.

Yeah Gio wasn't Norris caliber but he was still a good dman...there are worse dmen playing in the playoffs as we speak

Keep him, expose him in the expansion draft...two years the salary isn't bad

By all means if there is a way to upgrade and you need the salary space do it by don't trade Gio just to trade him

It is tough to evaluate people in this ‘return to play’ as normal. Opportunities to train were probably quite different. That could be a factor for older players (or even just simply specific players)

Gio won’t play forever but I can’t write him off based on a few early games out of this weird return to play

I will not even write off Sidney Crosby after his disappointing 3 points in 4 games

I was on HF earlier today. Boston fans want OEL. Willing to give up Debrusk a first round pick and more.

Here on CP OEL is a cap dump.

Just amazed at the difference we assign to players.

I am not arguing anything here. Just amazed the value of a player is so different with fans.

We have been conditioned to accept mediocrity. We shop at the dollar store and marvel about the $$$ we are not spending on players. Or coaches and GMs.

As if that matters to me or any other fan lol.

Well in a salary cap world it certainly matters to fans.

In that same thread on HF there is plenty opinions from Boston fans that think it would be a mistake acquiring him too. Even an Arizona fan chimes in and says they need to adjust their expectations for an underwhelming return.

Who knows though, I guess we will find out if and when he actually gets moved.

OEL would probably look great playing in Boston. He would still cost $8.25M/7 years, which is too much. Does that mean they don't want to re-sign Krug?

From Krug’s comments it sounds like he wants to explore the free agency path.

Revisionist take. Gio and his constant blundering is one of the primary reasons the flames didn't do anything in the playoffs this year (again.) We got through the play in round in spite of Gio's best efforts to see us fail, then he was ultimately successful in sandbagging us against Dallas.

The guy was barely a 2nd pair defender this year.

Some of you blather on forever on topics that are clearly not the in play. The flames will only move gio if he asks to be traded. That’s it. His salary isn’t going anywhere.

Well, there is a lot to talk about when we don't have all the answers like you do.

Hanifin
Kylington
Ryan
Lucic

for

OEL (1,500,000 retained)
Kuemper
Demers
Rights to Hall

Cap is almost even with the retention and the Coyotes save over $30 million in real dollars over the lifetime of all the contracts, even with the retention on OEL.

Hall - Monahan - Tkachuk
Gaudreau - Backs - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Bennett - Dube
XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX

OEL - Andersson
Gio - Demers
Vali - XXXXX

Kuemper
Rittich

Have to fill out the rest of the roster very cheaply, or if you do get Hall signed you actually do trade Johnny if you can find the right return out there.

I'd be fine with OEL @ 6,750,000 long term just as long as the Flames don't get rid of their 1st or 2nd round picks in this draft.

I think the biggest issue with OEL is do you really want to have to protect him during the expansion draft? I would reather use my protection slots on Andersson, Hanifn, and Valamaki. All these players are much better long term solutions.
