I don’t understand what you mean or how it is really any different than previous years... aside from it being done in two stages.

Who you should feel bad for is Detroit. They finished 24 points behind the 2nd worst team in the league and will be drafting 4th overall.
Why? Because the oilers are such useless pieces of crap that the league changed the rules and made it harder for the last place team to get 1st overall, which is how they ended up with mcdavid and how they now actually have a shot at lafreniere.

yep. there really should be no draft lottery but because of how bad edmonton was they had to put a rule in place. then they still won picks thru the lottery.

Yeah it sucks for Detroit but I don't really care about them failing or succeeding as much as I do about Montreal which is why I feel bad that Montreal had their chance #1 taken away from them. In theory, they could have just tanked in the qualifying round to guarantee their spot in the lottery and realistically that probably would have been the better option.

Here's what I don't understand: why not just do the whole draft lottery today? Why the need to get half of it done early with placeholder teams?

I don't think they expected a team with 2.5% chance to win the lottery.

Winnipeg is included because I can't live with that cloud hanging over Calgary's head for the next decade.
Minnesota, Nashville or Florida please (preferably Florida).

Yes, please! Panthers still need top end talent after all these years. Although, it would be nice if he could play right wing. We have lots of guys on the left already.

Oilers fans should be happy, watching the lottery should allow them to feel some sort of pre-COVID comfort. Another year where there team has no idea how to defend but you bet if they win the lottery those Orange popsicle jerseys will be throne right back on and their fans will continue their obnoxious streak of forgetting how awful they truly are. Another year and it’s the same ####ing story. Can we make it 5 Edmonton? History awaits

Starved for content at the time. This is just a bonus for the league to have a second lottery with something to promote on the off day between the play in and first round.

In hindsight the NHL is probably wishing they re-weighted the eight losing teams according to their points percentage.
1. Minnesota (0.558)
2. Winnipeg (0.563) + .005
3. New York (0.564) + .006
4. Florida (0.565) + .007
5. Nashville (0.565) + .007
6. Toronto (0.579) + .021
7. Edmonton (0.585) + .027
8. Pittsburgh (0.623) + .065
1-5 should be either equal chance, or have significant higher percent odds than 6-8.
1. Minnesota (20%)
2. Winnipeg (18%)
3. New York (16%)
4. Florida (14%)
5. Nashville (12%)
6. Toronto (7.33%)
7. Edmonton (6.66%)
8. Pittsburgh (6.0%)
Then they could have gone one further, and penalized teams that lost to a lower seed.

Their whole idea was to give the non-play-in teams something to get excited about while every other fanbase was gearing up for the play-in round. That worked out well...

If the Leafs win this tonight I'll have to move out of southern Ontario because it will be unbearable to listen to tv or radio.

If Edmonton wins I have decided I am going to riot.
I am on a small boat, in a small marina just off a small Bahamian island but I will be so mad that Bettman will definitely hear about it.

All or nothing for the Leafs - win the lottery or their 1st rounder goes to CAR.

I think the league just wanted to remind everyone they existed by doing the lottery before the play-ins
