Or is my understanding of things kind of lousy? (Always possbile...!)

This trade deadline just solidifies this franchise's inability to do do anything of substance. It's wasn't a terrible day and it definitely wasn't a day to remember. Just another "meh" day in the world of the Calgary Flames.
I continue to wonder why some people even bother to care if watching their supposedly favourite team makes them this miserable and despondent. I've been a fan since I was 5-years-old, and I am never going to stop hoping for the best, and enjoying the ride. Life is too short to grouse about every little thing.

At the end of the day, Flames are a better team than they were 24 hours ago, and they're only 3 points out of 2nd in the division. Not like they made these moves anticipating a lottery pick

Some of the difference went into bringing up the callups, without putting players on LTIR.

Treliving says on Sportsnet960 that there'll be more players sent down to Stockton tomorrow morning.

You know what? I expected to be disappointed with today and I am actually pleasantly surprised. We have injuries on D and these guys provide us with some extra jam for the playoff push.

Forbort has handled elite competition before and is physical. Big force and great at boxing out the front of the net. Something the Flames have struggled with.

Gustafsson can really help our transition game. We need that puck up the ice quicker and he can do that while also helping the PP.

What Im really intrigued about is how this sets us up for next year. With Gustafsson being a leftie on the right there is a good chance to sign him for a decent price.

I always expected the Flames to make a push for Hall and switch up their defensive mix for next year, but if these guys work out it clears that picture up a bit. I could see the Flames doing:

Sign Forbort - 2.75
Sigh Gustafsson - 3.75
Sign Hall - 9.5
Sign Demelo - 1.8
Re-sign Mangiapane - 2.55
Re-sign Kylington - 1.5

That leaves you the opportunity trade Hanifin. I have no doubt you could move him at the draft and get a first ++ to help restock the cupboard a bit.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Hall - Backlund - Tkachuk
Lucic - Ryan - Mangiapane
Dube - Bennett - Gawdin

Giordano - Andersson
Valimaki - Demelo
Forbort - Gustafsson
Kylington

Not perfect, but something along those lines. Might need to shave some cap by trading Bennett or finding a cheap back up depending on what the cap rises to. Would be better to get some more right shots in the forward group as well, but not bad!

well the good thing is we didn't acquire any cap related problems today, so there's that.

The upcoming offseason is going to be very interesting. 5 defensemen are UFA, there also might be a shake-up upfront and obviously there's the coaching decision. My expectations for this season are pretty low (always hoping for the best, but feel this is a bubble team at best) and today hasn't changed a whole lot. Trocheck would have been a nice pickup, but oh well.

This probably would have been a long shot as I'm not sure if Thornton would have wanted to come to Calgary but I think he would have been a good rental for the Flames. Thornton would have given the Flames offense some spark and I think it would have energized some of our sluggish forwards like Monahan and Gaudreau. They could have rallied around giving Joe one last playoff run before he retires. I could see Joe being a good short term mentor and teacher for some of the young Flames as well.

The crazy thing is the amount of people like that on this board. Like they are not content unless they have something to be miserable about. I don't get it

People sure seem to like the Athanasiou deal for the Oilers but are less than thrilled with Gustafsson. Holland paid two 2nd’s for 24 points. Tre paid a conditional 3rd for 26 points, from the back end no less. Much better salary to boot.

Also Mangiapane has 10 points, Backlund with 12 points in 11 games in February. That is top 6 numbers. Giving up more quality assets to bring in a player that in all likelihood wouldn’t be much of an improvement doesn’t seem like a good idea at this juncture.

And then when the team is doing well, they're nowhere to be seen.

I posted this in the Davidson thread too, but I swear we could have traded a 1st for Crosby and we'd have the usual posters whining about how that pick could have been even better and that Crosby is over 30

No chance Joe would come to Calgary. There might have been a temptation if Boston or TB came calling I think but ultimately he did what I figured he would, stay in SJ. He really loves it there.

If the draft is as deep as they say and we nail the picks we hung onto with some players that can come in and help soon then its not bad at all. They havent buried themselves or anything by being cautious. I doubt the Oilers get past any central teams and they are out quite a few picks for a -45 player and a d that isn't known to play D. Like people say take a run at Hall and hang onto Johnny. That stacks the deck a lot if Chucky stays at RW.

The Central teams? The Oilers aren't getting out of the Pacific.

I think the reason Treliving didn't over pay for a top 6 forward was the emergence of Mangiapane the last month or so.

I think the Flames are better today than yesterday and they did it without giving up prospects or 1st and 2nd round picks. That is a good thing. It isn't the sexy thing though.

Classic Trelosing deadline day, wasting assets, and not acquiring any solutions for the teams problems.

Cheers to another awful season!
