I'm curious about this too.
I bet getbak knows.

I can't remember the threshold. Is an in-person hearing used when the suspension is 5 or more games, or 6 more more games? So, for this scenario, is Kassian getting a maximum of 4 games or 5 games?

I have been wondering where the second linesman was at during the meltdown. I haven’t seen alternative camera views but I assume there must have been a second altercation going on that kept him away from breaking up Tkachuk/Kassian.

I would imagine it is out of the player's wallet. When an in-person hearing happens, the player is being offered an opportunity to defend himself - but it isn't mandatory. Seeing as players lose salary when they're suspended, I imagine the couple hundred dollars for the flight makes financial sense if they can help reduce the number of games they're suspended for. That would seem to make sense to me.

Agreed. Another possibility might be the player's team, who has a vested interest in the outcome of the hearing. However, teams cannot 'reimburse' fees such as supplemental discipline fines, and I imagine airfare costs in the process of getting these fines also counts.

Just watching the Edmonton media on Twitter, they've all crossed the line from being professionals to Blog fanboys, its really embarrassing.
Staples has really lost his nut and he in my opinion is making a fool out of himself with polls asking for a longer suspension for MT, crying about the hits and the fact that Kassian should be rewarded for what he did.
At the end of the day, its coming across as completely unprofessional, and someone really should tell him to stop.

I truly believe Kassian is a liability, at least when they play Tkachuk and the Flames. So I'm not really pining for a suspension here.
But I guess it would make for some interesting reading fodder from the Oilers media legion so there is that.

I am thinking 2 games, but I could see 5 games if they believe things will get out of hand if he plays the next 2 games against the Flames.

Ya, no way its less then Lucic 2 game. If one jab by Lucic with his glove on gets him 2 games then Kassian should get more fasho.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here at least some sanity is poking though.

It's exactly what their fans want, so they're feeding it. No one cares about "professionalism", it's about the clicks.

Nurse got 3 games for the Polak fight.
I have to think Kassian gets more, plus his post-game comments.
I'm guessing 6.

I will be blown away if he gets any time. He got 4 minutes of penalties that cost his team the game (albeit the penalties were incorrectly called). He’s going to get a fine similar to what Lucic got when he went after that player a year or two ago. It’s better anyways, I’d be really sad if he missed the next BOA.

DOPS has to throw the book at Kassian here, or they're setting themselves up for a ****storm.
If Kassian gets a fine, or less than a couple games, they're essentially saying "If you don't like getting hit, just assault the guy who hit you".
If Kassian is back for the next BOA, and he expects Tkachuk to fight, or chases a guy like Gaudreau or Lindholm/Monahan, he's opening up his team to a world of hurt. If McDavid or Draisiatl so much as bump into Rinaldo, what's stopping him from doing to them exactly what Kassian did to Tkachuk. The league needs to set a clear precedent here, that you can't jump a guy just because you have hurt feelings.

Add to this that McDavid essentially pushed him right into the arms of that gorilla. It all but ensured the outcome of that scrum.
