But seriously, didn't mean to take over the conversation, I was just musing that all the fashion advice is hilariously foreign to me. Not one bit of it matters. The Vans? Yeah. I get away with it. I suppose someone that puts more effort into their appearance would have trouble being comfortable wearing Vans to a wedding, but it's right in my wheelhouse. Right there. Same shoes I wore to Home Depot yesterday. They'll be clean, but they'll still be Vans or something similar. And by similar, I mean something that I tied the laces on the first day I owned them, and they've never been untied.

It’s like anything. If you care, then there’s advice for you, if you don’t care, then disregard.
It’s not like there’s anything wrong with prioritising comfort and ease. That’s a whole thing in and of itself. Nothing here is supposed to matter to everyone, it’s just for those who it does matter to.

Agreed, but there is a bit of wisdom in there, IMO. A clean pair of black Vans looks as decent as a pair of dress shoes. And you can wear them every day.
I suppose I went off on a tangent mentally when the topic was $600 shoes.

Ok. I'm not honestly trying to say that Vans are as nice looking as quality dress shoes. What I am trying to say is that a clean pair of Vans do not get noticed at all, being worn to a wedding or an xmas party, or anywhere that black shoes are required.
If you're becoming partner at your law firm, maybe you wear the leather shoes. I've worn Vans to many occasions and had multiple "F-U, I didn't even notice... Wish I though of that". So, ymmv.

I wear jeans, Vans, and a tshirt + hoodie if cold. I don't even own a suit. I seriously cannot imagine spending more than two minutes giving a flying F about whether my pants match my shirt. There is no "match". These are the pants, that's the shirt. Here's what I'm wearing.
But super secret tip for all you guys that are closer to my scale than to p12, black hightop Vans go with everything. I've literally worn the same shoes (when not on a construction site) for three years. And I'm including weddings and xmas parties in that.

Seriously, what an obnoxious post. What was even the point of you posting other to s--t on the thread? OMG guys, I care so little. I can't even believe I read the thread. I give so few f--ks on the scale I invented in my head just now, I have to tell you all about it.
Why don't you go make your own thread about your fashion tips for the sartorially-impaired since this one clearly isn't to your tastes?
I don't care if they're Vans or Versace, high-tops are not dress shoes. They are absolutely not suitable for a wedding.

Lol wut?
I opened it by saying that I got a kick out of what you guys are talking about. I called it 'musings'. Did I come along and tell you that you're stupid for caring about things I don't care about?
Get a grip.

Did I quote your backpedaling 'musing' post? No. I quoted the one where you were being obnoxious.
Here's another good example:

I waited until about 300 posts in before offering a different opinion. Suppose I should have not chimed in on a messageboard.
You sure done showed me. Vans are not acceptable replacements for dress shoes. Gotcha.

It's entirely circumstantial, and I'd give it a pass at certain events, with certain crowds, but I would most definitely notice if someone wore Vans to a wedding or Christmas party.
Again, very circumstantial, but there are definitely occasions where I would likely think less of someone for doing so.
It's great that fashion doesn't rank on your personal GAF scale and I can see the appeal of living a life like that. However, in some situations, I feel a person's general level of GAF for their host, event or general company is reflected in their appearance and wardrobe choices.
You wouldn't (God, I hope you wouldn't) wear sweat pants on a first date, to a professional job interview, a formal wedding or a funeral. Those are occasions where, if any ####s are given in regard to the host and/or the occasion, you surely recognize the lack of respect for said host and occasion that would be conveyed by your choice in pants. Vans may not be as egregious as sweat pants, but a clear slight nonetheless. At least you have the good sense to make sure they're 'clean'...
I think that's what dressing "well" comes down to... It's not necessarily about "fashion" or trends, or expensive clothes; it's about showing people in your company, under the appropriate circumstances, that you respect them enough that you found it worthwhile to put some basic level of effort into your appearance, if not for your sake, than at least for their's.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I'm not trying to slob it up. I'm just having a chuckle about how serious some people are about the kinds of shorts they wear, and what matches with what. I know it's not you giving me hell for having an opinion, and I agree that there are times and places. I think my times and places are a little looser than most, and I thought that tossing that into the ring might be amusing or interesting. Did not intend to inflame mr. srsbsns torquedog. So damn sorry that I did not think about possibly hurting feelings when disagreeing with a thread. Clothes! Let's fight!

Wait, I just re-read and I completely disagree with the xmas party part. You would seriously notice shoes on each person's feet at an xmas party? Really? Who the hell cares? Get a drink and let's talk about anything other than work.

This thread has been an eyeopener. I'm a scrub. I own about 6 tshirts, 5 pairs of shorts and one pair of jeans. I've been dodging weddings and funerals for a decade now. I had no idea jeans were $400 bucks and came from Japan.

Honestly, the amount you GAF about what you wear is probably more than the amount I GAF about your opinion.

Wife answer: I do not disagree it feels amazing, but no matter how comfy it feels, you should be embarrassed every time you put it on. This shirt might work for someone else, but definitely not you.
I agree with _Q_, better off to pay closer to full price for something that agrees with your wardrobe and you can wear it regularly rather than buying something on clearance that you shouldn't be wearing ever.
Different direction (Caridgans):
My wife loves the cardigan/academic long sleeve look (which I agree with), but we can never seem to find me anything that looks right. Either it's too baggy or the buttons look like they're about to burst. My wife did comment that I look good in formal and athletic, but I look kinda weird/awful in many types of offerings in between. Similar in nature to everything in Levi's being horrible for me other than the 541 being great, is there some style category similar to something like an athletic cardigan? most style articles about cardigans are useless as hell.
I've tried all sort of selection from Saks, Nordstrom, Club Monaco, Boss, Zara, J Crew, Banana, Simon's, The Bay etc. and nothing that's a reasonable balance between look and price. We did find one once at Simon's that looked really good for $50, but we can't seem to replicate that look even if we toyed with cardigans that were $200+ and nothing else at Simon's looks reasonably close. Since the cardigan is a little bit of a broad category, it's kinda crazy IMO we've only found one thing in the last 7 to 8 years that looks good on me. But reading this thread is making me wonder if there might be some specific style like a golf cardigans or something that fits my body shape how I want it to fit and I generally never go into the golf stores to look at brands (ie: Jay Lindenberg?).
Possibly all the other cardigans I've ever tried are essentially the equivalent fits of classic, boot cut and skinny for jeans, which would be possibly why everything I've ever tried on cardigan wise essentially didn't work? It's one of the rare things I think I'd be willing to spend a bit more on and if I find a category that is exactly what I want, I think I'd be retiring a ton of long sleeves and fall jackets from my wardrobe in a hurry.
Does my logic make sense? Or am I just going to have to manually look for a cardigan that looks good?
|
Getting this thread back on topic, I also had a tough time finding cardigans that looked good on me. Then I discovered Suit Supply in Washington, DC.
They don't have a store in Calgary yet, but do free shipping and returns within Canada
https://ca.suitsupply.com/en_CA/knit...refv1=Cardigan
For me, at least, their stuff fits incredibly well. Their Havana blazers fit me pretty much perfectly off the rack.
