Rantanen is not getting nearly enough credit. Once he found his game the Avs just steamrolled us.

Monahan scored a third of his points that season in his first 10 games.

I disagree. They opened my eyes during this series with their goaltending, player depth and speed. The Avs are a very good hockey team that is going to be a handful for the the Sharks or Knights in the next round.

Wasted a chance IMO and to me it’s even worse that we wasted what was a surprise elite goaltending appearance. That was our biggest question mark heading into the playoffs and it was answered then the rest of the team fell apart.
I hate to get into off ice stuff but I am a little concerned about top guys commitment to the game and fitness. Gaudreau and Monahan specifically have faded down the stretch and really struggle after team break / all star breaks.
If I’m Treliving though my focus for the offseason is on speed up front. Monahan, Tkachuk, Neal, Frolik, Jankowski, are not the quickest and that makes up half our top 9. Need to get quicker especially up the middle as our centres struggled with the Avs team speed IMO.

If the Flames can work for the entire next year on moving out of their half of the ice with puck support and not turning it over on the first or second pass, that would be great.
#1 culprit that killed them.

Worst part of the night for me was 4 goofs sitting behind me. 3 of them were wearing Avs jerseys and they were super obnoxious. They almost got kicked out in the first period and at the end of the game revealed themselves as Oilers fans. The one thing that gave me some comfort is they couldn’t me more than 22 so they were just children in 2006 and have known nothing but losing their entire lives. Like literally the most pathetic franchise in sports.
I am extremely sad and angered by this first round. I thought this year was different but we are halfway through Johnnys extension with 1 playoff win. Treliving made some great moves this summer but it wasn’t close to good enough. Interested to see what he does this summer but I am done with hockey after tonight for a while. I am not sure I will watch until next season
|
So the worst part for you was three Oilers losers, who’s team is so bad they needed to buy AVS jerseys and pay playoff prices for a Flames home game to have something to cheer about? Sounds like the best part of your night to me.

I'm not seeing Hanifin's name in here enough btw
In a game that mattered a lot, he was the worst of the bunch IMO

When it comes to the playoffs, Gaudreau is about as close to useless as you can get from a star. He is almost a complete non-factor. His one playoff point since 2015 is a secondary assist in a game the Flames lost
If you trade Gaudreau (and I think they should consider it), well, maybe it's time they get a crack at the lottery. It's not exactly something to sniff at. Literally every other team who's been around for more than two years has participated in the lottery! The Flames have never had the opportunity to select from that high-end pool of upper-echelon, top-of-the-board talent. They've always had to count on the underdogs coming through.
Not that I'm advocating for tanking as a first choice. I think they can give Gaudreau another crack at it. But if they trade him, it shouldn't be necessarily to tank. Just get another star who cares. Get another centre. Play Tkachuk on the first line with this dynamic centre and Lindholm on the right side.
Tkachuk - star centre acquired for JG - Lindholm
Bennett - Monahan - new right winger (Mangiapane?)
|
Most teams don't trade a 1C for a winger though, so who do you expect to get? You're realistically looking at a high-end 2C, similar to Monahan, if you trade Gaudreau after a disappointing playoffs. Which is why you need to keep him...
And we're in big trouble if we enter next season with Bennett and Mangiapane pencilled in on our 2nd line...

He was god awful. But I’m less concerned about a 22 year old in his first playoff series having some learning curve. More then willing to give him another shot at it.

I actually think Hamonic was a big part of that pairings issues. Was handling the puck like a grenade all series and had horrible gap control. Really struggled with the Avs speed.

I'm going for Columbus. Plucky underdogs who beat those jerks in Tampa.

I still think we come out long-term winners in the Dougie trade...but for the COL series, I think Dougie's offense and Ferlands grit would have brought a lot more of what we needed compared to what Lindholm and Hanifin provided.

Think that was more of an indictment on our center depth at the time.
At the end of the day, Mackinnon ran circles around Monahan all series long. Bednar couldn’t wait to get Mackinnon head to head against Monahan in Denver because he knew his center had a significant advantage on both ends of the ice. This wasn’t a Gaudreau vs Mackinnon series to me no matter how much the media wanted to make it. It was their center vs our centers and both Monahan and Backlund couldn’t cut it.
