That wasn't a penalty five years ago, let alone 20. And it shouldn't have been one last night, even though it was a Flame victimized by a suicide pass.

When was the last time a Flames' goalie played terribly and the team still won?

The hit on Janks was high , blind side and predatory.
The hit by Val has shoulder to chest from the front thing of beauty

Last night.

Flames deserved the win because they dominated pretty much the entire game. Smith alone made it a close game.

Hopefully this comeback will give him some confidence and he can at least get back to an “average NHL goalie” level because his play so far this year has been far from acceptable.

Exciting third period for sure. Good to see the blender yield some results. This sure is a Flames team with a lot of promise. If they can clean up the few mistakes a game in their own zone, and get the goaltending up to league average, they will be a force.

They've already given Gio the second assist on the Frolik goal. Officially a four point night:

Still buzzin' after the game last night.

I'm in love with Valimaki and that sweet play he made for the tying goal. Doing his best Dion Phaneuf impression with the monster hit. Best part of all that is he somehow got an assist on the play. Not sure how that works, maybe his foot hit the puck to Gaudreau? Or maybe it was so awesome that the stats guy just had to give him a point. Either way, I still can't believe this kid only turned 20 a couple weeks ago and is trending to be at the very LEAST a solid top 4 guy (probably even higher) for years to come. I was expecting a Olli Juolevi-type prospect, but he's already IMO blown him out of the water and is well on his way to being an important core piece. Still have to pinch myself that we have 3 defenceman who are 21 and younger...and all 3 have fit right in without missing a beat. Unreal. The Flames' backend is in great shape for years to come.

3M...oh 3M. Vintage. Can't say enough about them shutting down the best line in the world. Not only shutting down them, but owning them on the score-sheet and feeding them each a -3. Beautiful. Still can't believe Tkachuk is still on his ELC. What a player. Well deserved to be in the top 10 in league scoring.

Sam Bennett is quietly becoming in impact player in his own way. He'll never be the PPG centerman he was drafted to be. But that's ok. We need bottom 6 players with snarl and skill who can still make an impact. That fight according to the team changed the momentum of the game. You don't think it by looking at him. He looks like a quiet, calm kid who is just content to be in the NHL. But deep down he'll beat your ass in front of 18,000 people and do what it takes to win. I couldn't be happier with how he's progressed this season.

Neal with a huge goal to tie the game. The look on his face after as the camera panned on him showed a man with the monkey off his back. I think this opens the floodgates for him going forward.

Smith wasn't good and I said it before; the Flames have to stop thinking of Smith as the undisputed #1G. Smith was brought over with 2 years left on his contract. Year 1 was fine to have him hold the fort while the other 2 rookies got their feet wet. Year 2 needs to be the transition year where the hands over the reigns to the next guy. IMO he's not a part of the future after this season. Smith played well in the 3rd. But every game can't be an epic comeback like this. Smith got the win, but I hope Rittich starts next. I think BP is calling him the #1 as a sign of respect for him. But at some point it has to be Rittich who runs with it.

You have to think Gio is going to get some Norris love. I don't know what kind of witchcraft magic he's doing to keep himself playing at this level, but he's somehow managed to turn back the clock and looks like he's 25 out there. His contract was a bit scary when it was signed, and yet he's somehow trending upwards?? F'ing crazy.

Nice ATL report. After reading it, similar to Sabre fans, Avs fans are still 500x classier then Leaf fans.

Valimaki, on the video I saw, took one stride and glided into him.

Cole's hit seemed to have more of a hit "through" the player, while Valimaki's was more of a hit "into" the player.

Cole hit high near head vs. Valimaki into chest.

Cole's hit was, arguably, "violent" while Valimaki's was more to separate the player from the puck.

I can understand why Avs fans would be mad that the call, but don't think it is horse####.

Comparing the two hits is a beautiful example of the difference between a good open ice hit and a bad one. One achieves the primary purpose of stopping the team from exiting their zone, and the other is mainly designed to inflict pain or injury - the old “finish the check” even though the player has just (barely) gotten rid of the puck.

The hit on Janko was cleaner than being a 5 minute major, it was primary contact with the chest, was it high chest? sure but still chest. Maybe cole left his feet a little, give him 2 minutes. That hit certainly doesn't warrant a 5 minute major.

At absolute most that should be a 2 minute minor for the charge, but refs are so concerned with missing something physical that they over call it and it's mostly because a small vocal minority of hockey fans believe that hitting is bad. I feel like the refs saw Janko go down the tunnel and they let the result (apparent injury) dictate the penalty. The action, not the result, should dictate the penalty not the other way around.

That hit is not on Cole, that is 100% hanifin's fault for making that pass.

I think Cole takes way more steps along the blue line, then lifts upward towards Jankowski's head. I'm not sure if that was the initial or principal point of contact, but he was headhunting IMO.

Its as clean as it gets. Love the hit, hate the pass that set it up. The Avs got screwed on that call. Big time.

If that hit is not allowed, we might as well just give body contact up altogether.

I don't recall a flames team being this deep ever. Could be an exciting year.
Is it this one?

It's not as clean as it gets. It's borderline at best and we can argue about which side of the border it's on. He takes three or four strides, lifts up during the hit. Have you seen the wide angle, or just the last part where he cuts into Jankowski? He comes from the left side all the way to the right half of the rink.

Avs player didn't get demolished and didn't even end up on the ice. Valimaki hit him but didn't destroy him. I think if Valimaki was flying into that hit it should be a 5 minute penalty too. Valimaki made what was IMO a clean hit and the kind of hit we should embrace if we want physicality in hockey at all. It was awesome.

Awesome is awesome.

I know it's a fast game, but I found it interesting that Bennett, who's a very hard hitter himself with his share of open ice detonations, took immediate exception to that hit. If it were a truly clean hit/non charge, I doubt he would have been angry. It wasn't a staged fight, he was actually pissed right off about it and he had probably the best view.

With Bennett in the box for a lot of the 3rd I really loved how Peters adjusted the lines and it got me thinking about that kind of lineup going forward; would really like to see:

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Neal — Scoring line #1 x 18 mins
Bennett - Monahan - Ryan — Scoring line #2 x 16 mins
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik — Shutdown line x 17 mins
Dube - Jankowski - Czarnik/Hathaway — Energy line x 9 mins
