By all reports Gio is a great leader.
But I do think he is more of a lead by example guy.
Who is the guy grabbing this team by the scruff. Getting in guys faces.
But does that even work any more?
I don't know.
Mike Smith. From interviews with players they say Mike Dmith is the Most Vocal.
You don't pull him after the 4-4 goal. It's a tie game and Rittich is cold and you're gonna throw the best offence at him?
You don't pull him after the 5-4 softy either. It's still a game that they could come back in. And you don't call the timeout there either. You're down 1, you need to bank it for the late surge.
This is not on GG tonight.
It was 4-4 at the 2nd intermission and Smith was looking very rattled. Give Rittich the intermission to prepare mentally and warm up going into the 3rd and who knows what would have happened? But no, he waits until Smith lets in another bad one. Just like the playoff series vs. the Ducks last year.
People keep on saying the importance of in-game adjustments are overstated. But you have to acknowledge it's part of the job of being a Head Coach. And the same people who defend Gulutzan also defend Treliving.
So our GM has assembled an awesome roster, GG is a good coach who has implemented a great system; underlying stats show that the Flames are really good even though they keep losing. It's all luck? Is anyone accountable? Are we eventually allowed to be disappointed and point fingers?

I think coaching is much more of a problem than the roster you believe the opposite. Fair enough.
but does that mean he wasnt motivating them when they were winning?
And hey, I might be completely wrong and their is a white knight out there that can turn this club into what we all wish it would be.
But we have watched the majority of these guys for 3-4 years now, and there are still the same poor decisions being made by the same guys.
This team is soft, not as much physically (though thats an issue at times as well) as mentally. Im not sure any coach can change that alone...one guy who might is Darryl but I really doubt he would be interested in coming back, but thats just a guess on my part.
The coaches, for some reason, didn't pull Smith earlier. They didn't call a damn timeout. They do so, so much wrong and I'm starting to really hate watching this team
Man I had this all wrong.
I thought the hardest thing about coaching was developing a team structure that had them consistently out playing the opposition.
Who knew it was just calling time outs and yanking warrior goaltenders from the cage when they had off nights!

It was 4-3, you never will see a goalie pulled when the team is up one going into the third after giving up 3 goals

This team has zero killer instinct. Gulutzan may have crafted a system that leads to this team outshooting the opponents but they seem to take their collective foot off the gas pedal at the most inopportune moments. If there's one thing I liked about Hartley -- and there wasn't much to like there either -- it was how the Flames pounced whenever they needed to. This team physically cannot pounce.

And this is what worries me.
80% of what Gulutzan does is good - but it’s that final 20% that’s the most noticeable and the toughest part is it’s hard to tell if that’s his fault or the players.
But now it’s getting to the point where they may make a change out of desperation and we might lose the strong systems play and structure that GG implemented and the team will be just as weak mentally but less effective with a new coach/game plan.
Even worse is if we trade one of our more talented guys like Hamilton for Grit and leadership.
Well...that was an entertaining 40 minutes, anyhow. >.<
The highlight of the night, though. Beside Dad and I was a family. Two adults with their two small boys, probably 3 and 4 years old. Throughout the entire game, the boys would watch to see where Harvey The Hound would appear in the stands, point, wave and shout "Dog! Dog!"
Halfway through the third, Harvey appears in our section. He does his "pump up the crowd" thing, then looks around and sees the two little boys, who are shouting "Dog! DOG!" Harvey comes up the steps, and all the sudden they realize that this 'dog' is taller than their mom and dad...both shriek and bury their faces in the arms of the respective parents who were holding them.
Harvey was a champ, hung around for a bit funning for the boys and got them calmed down enough to 'pet' his arms with HUGE smiles on their faces.

Its fairly common sense. Surprised you didn't ever consider it.
Timeouts are not a new invention (actually every other sport has them).. yanking goalies has happened too -- you arent hurting his feelings by doing so.

Not agreeing with what somebody writes doesn’t make them a hack - that just means you have differing opinions.
Hacks are guys that make stuff up or just always toe the company line aka Francis or Staples.
Honestly it’s just clear you don’t like advanced stats (or bloggers Is my guess) but at least with Kent Wilson you know he’s also always watching the games too. And has provided damn good coverage outside of advanced stats at both Flamesnation and the athletic.
We need more coverage like Kent for the Flames and not less, at least he’s actually trying to dig into the teams issues instead of the same cliched articles and questions we get from most media.
Your opinion, and one which you are entitled too.
As I said if hack is to strong, i apologized (did you miss that?) but its what was common many years ago with writers who derived their conclusions from what some would call junk investigation. I associate Corsi and such in that way, and Im certainly allowed that perspective even if you and those who buy into it disagree. Im also allowed to voice that opinion, which is what I did in repsonse to a ridiculous assertion earlier using his "stats".
The hack thing though. you are probably right, its a different time and i need to be more aware.
Q how tough to see Smith struggle?
GG: Game 51 and first time our goaltending - both guys - couldn't be a star int he game. We're pretty fortunate.
Q: Late goal in the second?
GG: Tough one. 2 goal lead in the third is a big deal
Q: committed to process but you've had an ugly week. Any change in the process to prep for chicago?
GG: Nope. we have to stay the course. dig in a bit deeper. Go to the dirty areas. Two weeks ago we were on a 7 game win streak. Lost to the top 2 teams in the league
Q: start to periods or game team gets scored on or penalties
GG: We were prepared. That's just the game to me. We race for a puck and it goes over the glass. I thought our PK was good.
